Hatters Complete 4th Quarter Comeback for Senior Day Victory Against UNF

DeLAND, Fla. - The Stetson Women's Basketball team wrapped up the 2024 regular season by completed the 59-56 comeback victory over North Florida on Senior Day at the Edmunds Center on Saturday afternnon. The Hatters erased an 11-point deficit in the closing quarter as they conclude the season with a 12-4 conference record, their most conference wins since the 2016-17 season. Prior to the game, the Hatters recognized six seniors: Haley Stinebrickner, Jordan Peete, Jamiya Turner, Kiya Turner, Skylar Treadwell and Khamya McNeal.

Stetson found themselves down 4-0 early but a made free throw from Jaelyn Talley and a jumper from Quentarra Mitchell made the game 4-3. The Ospreys pulled out to a 9-5 lead but the Hatters reeled them back in scoring six straight points to take an 11-9 lead. North Florida quickly tied it up with a layup but Diawna Carter-Hartley made a layup and then cashed in from three on the Hatters next possession. Stetson finished the first quarter with a 16-11 lead.

To start the second quarter Anna Kunzwiler and Jamiya Turner each contributed two points as the Hatters extended their lead to nine. A couple of possessions later Skylar Treadwell hit a layup to make it 24-13 giving the Hatters their largest lead of the game. North Florida started cutting away at the Hatters lead and Stetson went into halftime up 28-23.

Coming out of halftime the Ospreys went on an 11-2 run to take the lead back from the Hatters. Khamya McNeal hit a layup that stopped the run and Talley tied the game back up at 34. North Florida continued trying to pull away but Stetson wouldn't let them get too far out front. At the end of the third quarter the Hatters trailed 39-42.

The Ospreys went on another run to start the fourth quarter taking an 11 point lead. Stetson slowly started chipping away starting with some great defensive stops. Over the last five minutes the Hatters went on a 14-3 run getting points from five different players. With 1:11 left Jordan Peete hit the layup that tied the game at 54 while drawing the foul. She hit the free throw to give the Hatters back the lead. North Florida hit a jumper to take the lead back with 40 seconds. On the next possession for Stetson, Talley grabbed a huge offensive rebound and laid it up and in to reestablish the lead. The Hatter defense kept the Ospreys off the scoreboard the rest of the way and closed it out with a 59-56 victory.

Talley was a force in the paint for Stetson as she tallied her second double-double of the season. She scored a season-high 18 points while pulling in 10 rebounds, both of which were team highs. Mitchell was the other Hatter to score double digits as she tallied ten points while picking up seven rebounds and two assists.

Stetson has locked up the #2 seed for the ASUN Championship and will be playing the winner of #7 and #8 in the first round. That game will take place on March 9th at 6pm here at the Edmunds Center.
