DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson Hatters got a pair of stellar pitching performances in Saturday's ASUN double-header against Bellarmine, splitting the twin bill behind complete games from
Hannah Marien and
Lauren Hobbs.
After Hobbs took the hard-luck loss in the the series opener, Marien (5-9) was dazzling in the nightcap, tossing a one-hitter and striking out four to pick up the win.
The Hatters would strand a pair in the first inning, but pushed one across in the second, using singles from right fielder
Jaela Haynes, first baseman
Marissa Baxter, and shortstop
Addison Foster to take a 1-0 lead after two innings of play.
Stetson added on in the fifth, when left fielder
Annabella McClerren drew a leadoff walk. After second baseman
Michelle DiPuma moved her over with a sacrifice bunt, centerfielder
Kami Eppley picked up the RBI, roping a single to right-center to drive in McClerren and give the Hatters a 2-0 lead.
The Hatters broke the game open in the sixth inning, when third baseman
Gia Napoli and Foster worked walks before scoring on a bunt single and throwing error off the bat of designated player
Madelyn Synoracki. Catcher
Lath Freeman ripped a double to deep left field and McClerren followed with a single to left to drive in Synoracki. After McClerren stole second base, the Hatters got an RBI fielder's choice from DiPuma that saw McCLerren slide around the tag at third. A double steal pushed the lead to 7-0 and Eppley put capped the game with a single to left to plate DiPuma and give Stetson the run-rule victory.
The day's first game was a pitcher's duel for the first five and a half innings, with the Hatters and Knights combining for one run and four hits. Stetson spotted Bellarmine a run in the top of the first, and was finally able to answer back in the bottom of the sixth, using a leadoff walk and stolen base from Foster and an RBI groundout from Freeman to even things at 1-1.
The Knights would answer with a pair in the top of the seventh, but Stetson wouldn't go down without a fight. McClerren reached on a fielding error to open the frame, before moving to second on a passed ball and third on a single from Eppley. A groundout from first Baxter drove in McClerren and cut the Knight lead to 3-2, but a fielder's choice and a strikeout ended the threat.
Hobbs (5-6) went the distance for Stetson, surrendering three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out five.
The Hatters and Knights will settle the series tomorrow at 12:00 PM.
