Hatters Take Both Games of Saturday Double-Header Against Bradley

Griffis and Dessureault cap off the day with back-to-back jacks

DeLAND, Fla. - The Stetson University baseball team took both of their seven-inning games of their Saturday double-header against the Bradley Braves as they extended their record to 11-5 on the season. The Hatters began the weekend with a 6-4 win before picking up a 7-1 victory, the latter of the two saw the Hatters plate six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Among those six runs were a pair of back-to-back homeruns by Evan Griffis and Yohann Dessureault, the former's being a two-run shot. It was also Dessureault's fifth homerun of the season as he continues to lead the team.

"It's great to get a sweep, it's hard to beat teams that many times. I think that we struggled offensively today in the early innings but we got really clean defense for the most part today and we got really good pitching that kept us in the ballgames," said Head Coach Steve Trimper. "I think it's important for us and it's a good two wins for the guys and now we have to switch the page and come out tomorrow and try to get the next win.

With reigning ASUN Pitcher of the Week Anthony DeFabbia on the bump, the Braves struck first in game one. After a 1-2-3 inning to start off the game, Bradley took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-out single up the middle.

It didn't take long for the Hatters to respond as junior catcher Gio Cueto knotted up the game in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff homerun to left center field, his first homerun as a Hatter.

Bradley reclaimed the lead with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth following a leadoff double.

Cueto came through again in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out RBI single to right field to plate Nelphie Lopez, who reached on a leadoff single.

The Braves regained the lead with a leadoff homerun in the top of the sixth but the Hatters battled back and responded with a big bottom of the sixth, putting up four runs in the inning.

With one out, Mike Handal drew a lengthy ten-pitch walk. After Evan Griffis entered as a pinch runner, Dessureault doubled down the left line, plating Griffis and taking third on a throwing error. Nelphie Lopez then drew a walk before Lorenzo Meola reached on a fielder's choice which resulted in another throwing error, scoring Dessureault.

Meola successfully swiped second base, setting the stage for freshman outfielder Kyles Jones to take the plate with two runners in scoring position. Jones then roped a double down the left line to extend the Hatters lead to 6-3.

The Braves would tack on one more run before Ty Van Dyke entered to close out the game, striking out the final two batters to secure the Hatters win.

DeFabbia was a no-decision after going 4.2 innings in game one, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out one. Cole Stallings earned the win, yielding only one run over 1.1 innings, while Van Dyke picked up a save.

In game two, it was the Hatters who struck first this time around. After holding the Braves scoreless through two innings, with starting pitcher Aric McAtee recording three punchouts, the Hatters took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after Daniel Labrador singled home Jayden Hylton, who reached on a double down the right field line.

The Braves tied the game at one apiece in the top of the fifth with a two-out single through the right side.

Reliever Chris Shine then took the mound in the top of the sixth, striking out the side, as the momentum shifted in favor of the Hatters, who racked up six runs in their side of the inning.

It all began with Meola and Jones leading off the side with a pair of singles. With one out, Cueto was intentionally walked before Hylton plated a run on a sacrifice fly to center field. Labrador then extended the lead with an RBI single to right field to score Jones. The Braves failed to pickoff Logan Hughes, who pinch ran for Labrador, as a throwing error would result in another run.

With a 4-1 lead already established, the Hatters weren't satisfied. With a 3-0 count, Griffis crushed a two-run shot to left field, his third of the season. On the very next pitch, Dessureault tagged along with a no-doubter to straightaway center. It was the first time this season that the Hatters went back-to-back while Van Dyke would close out the game for another Hatters' victory.

"His batting average doesn't look so sexy on paper right now but he gets a 3-0 count and I give him the swing, I'm trying to tell him as his head coach that I have confidence in him and same thing with Yohann," said Trimper. "Good hitters will be aggressive hitters and that's what we need to do, we weren't aggressive earlier on, we made great adjustments but I just wish it would've been third inning adjustments and not sixth inning."

McAtee was a no-decision, striking out five batters across 5.0 innings pitched while allowing one run.

The Hatters return to action on Sunday morning at 11:00 AM at Melching Field at Conrad Park as they look to complete the series sweep.
