CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Stetson University baseball team picked up their second win of the weekend against the Queens Royals on Saturday afternoon, marking their eighth series win of the season. Five Hatters recorded multiple hits in the game including sophomore Isaiah Barkett and freshman Kyle Jones, who each racked up three hits to help power the Hatters over the Royals. Stetson saw five of their runs come in the ninth inning when Landon Moran broke the game open with a three-run shot to right-center field.
Senior Aric McAtee, now 2-3 on the season, got the win out of the bullpen for Stetson, who is now 33-18 and 17-9 in conference play, clinching them a berth in the ASUN Championship. The right-hander went 2.2 innings, giving up one unearned run on three hits, allowing one walk while striking out six. Senior John Modugno started the ballgame and went four innings, surrendering only one run on three hits, while walking one and striking out two.
In addition to his three hits, Jones had an RBI to lead the Hatters. Barkett added a triple and an RBI to his three-hit performance as well. Moran put together two hits in four trips to the plate including the home run, a walk and three RBIs. Brandon Hylton continues to stay hot as he recorded another two RBI performance with a pair of extra base hits in four at-bats.
The Hatters were trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board.
The Royals then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 3-2 until the Hatters expanded their advantage in the eighth. Stetson pushed across a run on Hylton's one-out RBI double, which brought the Hatters lead to 4-2.
Stetson held Queens scoreless before building their lead to 9-2 the following inning. The Hatters bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Moran. Queens put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Stetson still coasted to the 9-3 win.
The Hatters out-hit the Royals at a 15-8 clip while going 4-for-13 (.308) with runners in scoring position. On the other hand, Stetson's pitching staff limited Queens to just 1-for-10 (.100) with runners in scoring position.
