CHARLOTTE, N.C. - In what was the final road game of the regular season, the Stetson Hatters fell 12-10 in a 10-inning matchup to the Queens Royals on Sunday afternoon. Despite the outcome, the Hatters launched an impressive comeback effort, erasing a six run deficit but plating seven in the eighth inning. Daniel Labrador launched a pair of home runs including a grand slam but it was not enough as Stetson settles for a 2-1 record in the weekend series.
Senior Chris Shine, now 2-3 on the year, took the loss on the mound for Stetson, who falls to 33-19 and 17-10 in the conference. Daniel Paret made the start, striking out six batters over 4.1 innings of work.
The Hatters were trailing 1-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Sophomore Landon Moran drove in two runs for Stetson with a single to right center, that scored sophomore Evan Griffis and sophomore Isaiah Barkett.
The Royals then rallied to score three runs and take a 4-2 lead before the Hatters got back on the board in the fourth. Stetson picked up a run on Labrador's leadoff home run to left field, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Royals.
Queens built their lead to 9-3 before the Stetson offense got back in action, overtaking the Royals to grab a 10-9 advantage in the eighth. Stetson did a majority of their damage with two outs, scoring seven total runs with four crossing as a result of a grand slam off the bat of Labrador, his second home run of the afternoon. The Hatters were unable to hold the lead, however, as Queens scored three times over the remaining two innings to take a 12-10 win.
While Stetson was outhit by the Royals, the Hatters saw four batters tally multiple base hits including a four-hit performance by Moran. The Hatters got three hits in six at-bats with the bases loaded and drew nine walks from the Queens pitching staff. Every Hatter starter reached base safely in the loss as Stetson left 13 runners stranded.
