DELAND, FLA. - Stetson University welcomes Daniel Omi Fuentes as the new Assistant Volleyball Coach. Omi comes to DeLand from Windermere High School where he was the Women's Volleyball Head Coach from 2021 to 2023. At Windermere he helped the team reach the Metro West Tournament Championship twice, District Championship, Regional Championship, the State Championship in which the team was runner up and was selected the Metro West Coach of the Year twice.
The Puerto Rico native started playing volleyball at the age of twelve and competed at many different levels. He participated in Puerto Rico and USA tournaments including the Boys Junior National Championship. In high school, Omi won different invitational tournaments including the National Championship of Public Schools in Puerto Rico. Omi played for the University of Puerto Rico while obtaining his bachelor's degree in Adapted Physical Education.
In his fourteen years of coaching, he has worked with development teams, and high-performance teams from youth to professional, school programs and private clubs. Omi started his coaching career with a women's program with Toa Alta Queens Volleyball Club before moving over to the NV Elite Club in Naranjito. He worked with school programs at Naranjito High School and Santa Teresita Academy. While in Puerto Rico, Omi worked with the Puerto Rico Professional League with Los Changos de Naranjito, Semi-Professional League with Plataneros de Corozal and Las Pinkin de Corozal.
After moving to the United States, Omi worked at Nona Sports while volunteering with the SunRidge Middle School Volleyball team.
In 2018 he joined OTVA, qualifying five times to the USAV Nationals. They claimed third with the AAU 12 Club Division in 2019 and were the AAU National Champions in the 17 Open Division in 2020. Also in 2020, Omi joined OBV reached the USAV BJNC second plate in the U16 USA Division.
Omi is a certified Coach in Puerto Rico at three different levels. He is also USAV Impact Certified and a Special Olympics Certified Coach.
