DELAND, Fla - For the first time since the historic 2018 season and for the ninth time in program history, the ASUN Championship belongs to the Stetson Hatters. With a 5-3 win over Kennesaw State, the Hatters claimed the title as Lorenzo Meola takes home MVP honors. The Hatters jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a championship win.Â
Senior Anthony DeFabbia, finishing 8-1 on the season, started on the mound and picked up the win for Stetson as they advance to 40-20 on the year. The southpaw went five innings, giving up one run on eight hits, allowing two walks and striking out five. Senior Nick Durgin closed out the game, picking up his first save of the season and closing the door on Kennesaw State, throwing 3.2 innings, giving up one run on one hit, with two walks and one strikeout.
The Hatters got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Stetson plated two runs when Meola left the yard with sophomore Landon Moran aboard, a 411 foot shot which clocked 103 off the ba. It was Meola's third home run of the tournament as he went long in three straight at-bats.
Stetson then held the Owls scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Sophomore Evan Griffis came across to score the lone run of the inning for Stetson, which brought the Hatters lead to 3-0.
Kennesaw State narrowed Stetson's lead to 3-2 before the Hatters stretched the advantage to 5-2 in the eighth inning. The Hatters added two to their tally on senior Brandon Hylton's two-run homer to right. Kennesaw State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Stetson still held on for the 5-3 win.
The Hatters had control of the rest of the game after jumping ahead of the Owls 2-0 in the top of the second. Stetson's pitching staff limited Kennesaw State to just 1-for-11 (.091) with runners in scoring position. Stetson pitchers faced 43 Kennesaw State hitters in the game, forcing eight ground balls and 12 fly balls while striking out six.
