MERCER, NJ - The Stetson men's rowing team finished day one of the IRA Championship as the varsity 4+ advanced from the time trials to the semi finals.
In the time trials Stetson came across the line with a time of 6:12.182, which earned them the eighth spot out of 35 boats. The Hatters finished in front of boats from Penn, Syracuse, Harvard and Stanford.
The eighth qualifying spot earned the Hatters a spot in the semi-final, where they would finish fifth with a time of 6:25.871 ahead of the Drexel boat.
The finish puts the varsity 4+ in the third final on Saturday at 11:00AM. Other boats in the final are St Josephs, Penn, Boston, Hobart and Drexel.
On Saturday, the Hatters finished second in a close race that was neck and neck all the way to the end. The official time for Stetson was 6:32.223 just behind the boat from Penn who had a time of 6:31.759.Â
Quotable:
"The final was our most exciting race of the spring season. The whole way it was a close race between us and Penn. Each boat took turns making a move and then it was answered by the other. They were evenly matched for 1750 meters. It came down to the final sprint and Penn started a stroke before us and made their move. We were able to bring it back, but there was no room and we came in second," said assistant coach
Anthony Chacon.
