Annika Seem Gives Stetson Last Minute Win Over Gardner-Webb

Annika Seem scored in the ninetieth minute of the match Thursday night as Stetson defeated Gardner-Webb 2-1 giving Head Coach Jamie Souza his first win.

"Overjoyed," said Head Coach Jamie Souza about his and the team's first win. "Pleased for the group. We talked a lot about what it takes to win. There isn't a better way to do it then getting a 90th minute game winning goal. I'm super proud of the group and hopefully we can keep it going into the weekend.

The Hatters came firing out of the gate as Payton Quinones, in her collegiate debut, put a shot in the back of the net off an assist from Lea Alexander. That goal gave the team a 1-0 lead that they carried into halftime. Goalkeeper Ashleigh Wise only faced one shot on goal in the first half and made the save with ease. Offensively, the Hatters tallied three shots on goal and generated four corners to help generate scoring opportunities.

"It was a really good start and first half," said Souza. "We had to change our game plan at the beginning of the game because of the layout of the facility. The team adapted really well and were able to develop good counter attacks. Lea did a great job by cutting into the box and having Payton, a freshman putting it in the back of the net was fantastic."

In the second half, the Runnin' Bulldogs answered back in the fifty first minute to tie the game. The score stayed tied through the eighty eighth minute as Wise came up with a tremendous save to keep the score even. Off her save the team was able to find Stella Comana on the left side. Comana pushed the ball up the pitch and found Seem on a run and she found the back corner of the net with seconds to spare on the clock.

"That was a big moment," said Souza. "Ashleigh rectified an early mistake and used her experience to make a huge save. The ladies found Stella who was a threat all night and she found Annika who slotted it in the back post."

After a thrilling first win on the season, Stetson will prepare for their game on Sunday, August 18 against Wofford. That game is slotted to begin at 1pm.
