Stetson Women's Soccer defeated Florida International Thursday night 1-0, on the left foot of
Alyssa Stevens.
Ashleigh Wise also posted her second consecutive clean sheet and fifth career shutout.
"We spoke a couple of times about set pieces being a key to having a good season so executing that is huge for group belief," said Head Coach
Jamie Souza. "It took us a couple of minutes to get our markings and structure right but after that we had a lot of success. Alyssa and Payton have been impressive at the collegiate level with both scoring in first four games. I'm super happy for the group and super proud. It took everyone to get the win tonight."
The Hatters and Panthers were deadlocked through the first forty-five minutes. Stetson tallied seven shots with one being on goal with Wise making four saves. After early pressure from the Panthers, the Hatters' back line settled in and was able to control the pace of the game.
Stetson came out playing fast to start the second half and were rewarded in the fifty seventh minute. After a deflected shot off the foot of
Lea Alexander, the ball found Stevens in the box, and she was able to put it into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Hatters added five more shots in the second half and Wise stood strong giving her five total saves in the game.
"There was a lot of chaos in the box and that is when good things happen," said
Alyssa Stevens. "The ball came and I just hit it and I didn't think it went in at first. But it went in, and it was the best feeling in the world. At halftime, everyone was really positive so I really had a lot of faith that the team would come through today."
A short road trip is up next for the Hatters as they will travel up to Norman, Oklahoma to take on the Sooners. That game will kick off at 7:00 PM on Thursday, September 5.
