Box Score 2 DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Stetson Hatters went 1-1 on Friday, August 30 falling in three sets to Portland before bouncing back to sweep Manhattan.
In the first match against Portland, Stetson fell behind 0-3. The first set showcased the two teams battling back and forth with Portland pulling ahead in the end to win the first set 27-29. The Hatters went on to drop the next two sets, 22-25 and 14-25.
Annabelle Standish led the way in the first match with 10 kills followed by
Nyah Molina and
Leilani Vitale, who each recorded eight. Molina also recorded a team-high 19 assists and a team-high nine digs. Freshman
Ayala Halfon led Stetson in blocks with three.
Against Manhattan, Stetson was down early in the first set, but were able to force the Jaspers into making mistakes on long rallies to close the gap. The Hatters went on a 3-0 run to not only tie the set but take a one-point lead. After trading points, the Hatters went on a 4-0 run which included two aces by
Haruka Sugimoto. Stetson would extend their lead in the set up to six before winning the set 25-18.
The Hatters pulled the same feat in the second set that they did in the first. After trailing early, Stetson battled black and went on a 5-0 run to take a 19-16 lead. Once they had the lead, they didn't look back, racing to a 25-18 second set victory capped off on an ace by freshman
Jenna Simmons.
In the third set, the Hatters kept their foot on the pedal and pulled away early, eventually running away with the set, closing it out 25-11 to complete the sweep against Manhattan.
Stetson will conclude the Bash at the Beach tournament tomorrow, August 31 against Bethune-Cookman at 1:30 pm.
