Five different players scored for Women's Soccer as the Hatters put on a clinic Wednesday night with a 5-1 victory over The Citadel.
"It's brilliant," said Head Coach
Jamie Souza about having five different players score. "For teams looking at our roster and thinking who's our best player it shows that our goals can come from anywhere. It's always nice to have the whole team firing and confident that they can score."
Stetson started off the game with
Ashleigh Wise making an incredible diving save to keep the game scoreless. In the eight minute,
Stella Comana was able to give the Hatters the lead by finding the back of the net.
Annika Seem sent a beautiful ball into the box from the corner and
Kamryn Wilson was able to get her head on it. As the ball was going to the net Comana flicked her left foot and redirected the ball into the net.
"It was a great team win," said
Annika Seem. "Stella and Sawyer finished two good balls I sent into the box. With the shot I saw it was open, so I just took it. I was excited to score. It was pretty far out so I didn't think it was going to go in. It was an ambitious shot, but it went in."
Only a couple of minutes later,
Sawyer Reynolds scored her first collegiate goal off another set piece from Seem to put the Hatters up 2-0. Later in the first half
Payton Quinones was able to create some space and get a shot off that found its way past the outstretched goalie to put Stetson up 3-0.
To start the second half, the Bulldogs came out with determination scoring from a corner kick to make it 3-1. However, the Hatters weren't done scoring. Seem was able to add a goal to her two assists on a bending shot into the top right corner from outside the box.
Ava Kooker tallied her first collegiate goal as she was able to use her speed to beat the defenders and slipped the shot into the bottom left of the net. Stetson was able to hold off the Bulldogs in the last ten minute to win 5-1.
"We didn't hit our second gear in the first half but found ourselves up three up by being really ruthless," said Souza. "Our set pieces and our third goal on a great move and finish from
Payton Quinones. The Citadel had a really good go in the second half with fight and endeavor the first five minutes and we struggled to get out of it. The war of attrition led to their goal. As the team settled into the half, I thought our quality showed through and I thought we created great goal scoring opportunities."
The Hatters will now take a trip to Tampa and take on USF on Sunday, September 15. That game is slated for kickoff at 6pm.
