Hatters Drop Final Non-conference match to FAU

Stetson Volleyball fell to Florida Atlantic 1-3 on Saturday, the final day of the Owls Paradise Classic. 
 
The Hatters started out the first set on fire, taking a 5-0 lead. However, they wouldn't be able to hold on dropping the first set 13-25. 
 
Stetson trailed throughout the beginning of the second set. Down 7-12 the Hatters rattled off a 4-0 run to get within one with a kill from Leilani Vitale and Kayla Balfour, an ace from Vitale and a block from Balfour and Lauren Della. Balfour then gets back-to-back kills to tie the set at 13. Stetson would then find themselves down by four again and went on another 4-0 run to tie the set at 17. The Hatters took the lead and didn't look back winning the set 25-21.
 
In the third set, the Hatters started off with the momentum taking an early lead. Florida Atlantic ended up tying the set at 19 and Stetson dropped the third set 21-25. 
 
Stetson was trailing early in the fourth set before exploding for a 5-0 run to take an 8-7 lead. Following an Owls point, the Hatters rattled off four straight points to take a 12-8 lead with kills from Anabelle Standish and Jenna Simmons as well as an ace from Standish and a block from Zuzanna Rut and Vitale. They were able to use another short scoring run to go up 15-10 but Florida Atlantic tied the set at 15. Stetson was then trailing 17-22 and went on a 3-0 run to get back within two. Late in the set Simmons got the Hatters back within two. On the next play Vitale and Rut secured a block on a long rally to make it 23-25. The Hatters would fall in the set though 23-25 and in the match 1-3. 
 
Standish led the team in kills with 11 followed by Balfour with 9. Vitale led the team in assists with 19 and Selin Kalkan added another 12. Defensively, Haruka Sugimoto finished with the team leading 13 digs with Vitale right on her heels with 12. At the net, Balfour tallied a team high seven total blocks followed by Rut and Della with 6 and Vitale with 5. 
 
The Hatters will now get ready for conference play as they host FGCU on Tuesday September 24. That match will begin at 5pm.
