DeLand, Fla. — Stetson (6-10, 2-2 ASUN) delivered a commanding performance on Sunday afternoon, sweeping West Georgia (25-17, 26-24, 25-20) at the Edmunds Center. The Hatters controlled the match from start to finish, fueled by seven service aces, 49 digs, and a .250 hitting percentage.
Zuzanna Bury emphasized the team's focus and composure in the win. "That's what we wanted to focus on today — the mental part of the game rather than the skill side," Bury said. "We did a good job of staying consistent and not giving up points when we were ahead. Everyone is contributing, even the players coming off the bench are bringing energy and it's great to see."
Stetson opened the first set with steady offensive rhythm, capitalizing on early opponent errors to build an early lead. Nyah Molina directed the attack efficiently, setting up key kills for Jenna Simmons and Xinlei Yang. Midway through, blocks from Bury and Kayla Balfour kept the Hatters in control, while Simmons delivered back-to-back kills to close the set 25-17 and give Stetson the early advantage.
The second set proved more competitive as West Georgia jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind two service aces. The Hatters responded with kills from Simmons and Yang to steady the momentum. Trailing 13-7, Stetson mounted an impressive comeback, highlighted by a service ace from Molina to tie the score at 13. Both teams traded points late, but the Hatters' poise prevailed as Bury capped the set with a decisive kill to secure a 26-24 win and a 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, Stetson seized control early with a 4-0 run sparked by Bury and Balfour's blocking presence. Molina continued to orchestrate the offense, assisting on multiple kills from Simmons and Lilyanna Parker as the Hatters built a 14-4 advantage. West Georgia attempted a late push, closing within 18-16, but Stetson quickly responded. Bury delivered key points down the stretch, and her final service ace sealed the match at 25-20.
Molina led the Hatters with 32 assists, 11 digs, and two service aces in another well-rounded effort. Bury paced the offense with 13 kills while adding four blocks and six digs. Simmons contributed nine kills and nine digs, while Vitoria Stedile anchored the defense with a team-best 15 digs.
With the win, Stetson improves to .500 in conference play and picks up valuable momentum heading into the road stretch. The Hatters return to action on Friday, Oct. 10, when they face North Alabama at 7 p.m. at CB&S Bank Arena in Florence, Ala.
