DELAND, Fla. – The Stetson Hatters jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back, cruising to an 11-1 run-rule victory over UMBC in their home opener Friday night at Melching Field at Conrad Park. With the win, the Hatters improve to 4-1 on the season and 6-3 in home openers under Head Coach Steve Trimper.
Stetson dominated both at the plate and on the mound, out-hitting the Retrievers 11-2 while striking out nine batters.
Freshman Bryce Gluckman earned the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings without allowing a hit, issuing no walks, and striking out two. Junior Ethan Phillips got the start, working four innings while surrendering just one run without giving up a hit. He walked five batters and struck out four.
The Hatters wasted no time getting on the board, plating three runs in the first inning. Lorenzo Meola and Evan Griffis each drove in a run with RBI singles, while Salvador Alvarez added another on a groundout to short.
After holding UMBC scoreless, Stetson extended its lead in the third. Griffis delivered another RBI single, and a later pair of Retriever errors allowed two more Hatters to cross the plate, pushing the advantage to 6-0.
The offensive surge continued in the fourth when Stetson belted two home runs as part of a four-run frame. Landon Russell launched his first career homer, a three-run blast to center, scoring Juan De La Cruz and Foster Apple. Apple, a freshman making his debut as the designated hitter, recorded his first collegiate hit. Two batters later, Meola sent a solo shot to center, just to the opposite side of the batter's eye, stretching the lead to 10-0.
UMBC got on the board in the fifth, but the Hatters sealed the run-rule win in the eighth. Apple capped off his memorable debut with a walk-off RBI single, securing the 11-1 victory.
Stetson finished 6-for-12 (.500) with runners in scoring position, while its pitching staff held the Retrievers to 0-for-6 in similar situations.
The Hatters return to action tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes at the MAC.
