DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson Hatters returned to action at the MAC on Saturday evening, squaring off with the Iowa Hawkeys. The Hatters came up short on the night, falling to the Hawkeyes 7-0.
Iowa (2-3) built the lead with a single run in the third, a pair in the fifth, and three more in the third, before closing out the night's scoring in the ninth.
Stetson got a leadoff single from designated hitter
Foster Apple to open the seventh, and second baseman
Juan De La Cruz drew a one-out walk, but the Hatters were again unable to push one across.
Stetson again looked to put up a fight in the eighth, when Meola drew a leadoff walk and Taylor ripped a one-out single up the middle. After a wild pitch moved the runners up, catcher
Salvador Alvarez drew a walk of his own to load the bases, but a double play would keep the Hatters off the board.
Meola reached base three times on the night thanks to three walks, while Alvarez drew a pair and Russell, Taylor, and Apple all chipped in with a hit.
Jonathan Gonzalez struck out six Hawkeyes over 4.0 innings of work, while
TJ Melani and
Turner Spoljaric head had a pair of K's in 1.1 and 0.2 innings, respectively.
Max LeBlanc worked a scoreless inning, and
Justin Solimine and
Dylan Jacobs each struck out one in 1.0 inning of work.
The Hatters close out the weekend tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 PM, facing of the the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Stetson will then welcome the Florida Gators to the MAC on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM.
