Hatters Fall To Hawkeys

DeLand, Fla. -  The Stetson Hatters returned to action at the MAC on Saturday evening, squaring off with the Iowa Hawkeys. The Hatters came up short on the night, falling to the Hawkeyes 7-0.

Iowa (2-3) built the lead with a single run in the third, a pair in the fifth, and three more in the third, before closing out the night's scoring in the ninth.

The Hatters(4-2) threatened in the sixth inning, as third baseman Isaiah Barkett, shortstop Lorenzo Meola, and left fielder Jordan Taylor all worked walks, but a pop-up ended the threat.

Stetson got a leadoff single from designated hitter Foster Apple to open the seventh, and second baseman Juan De La Cruz drew a one-out walk, but the Hatters were again unable to push one across.

Stetson again looked to put up a fight in the eighth, when Meola drew a leadoff walk and Taylor ripped a one-out single up the middle. After a wild pitch moved the runners up, catcher Salvador Alvarez drew a walk of his own to load the bases, but a double play would keep the Hatters off the board.

Meola reached base three times on the night thanks to three walks, while Alvarez drew a pair and Russell, Taylor, and Apple all chipped in with a hit. Jonathan Gonzalez struck out six Hawkeyes over 4.0 innings of work, while TJ Melani and Turner Spoljaric head had a pair of K's in 1.1 and 0.2 innings, respectively. Max LeBlanc worked a scoreless inning, and Justin Solimine and Dylan Jacobs each struck out one in 1.0 inning of work.

The Hatters close out the weekend tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 PM, facing of the the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Stetson will then welcome the Florida Gators to the MAC on Tuesday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM.
