PROVO, UT – Stetson received contributions from every part of its lineup, with all nine starters reaching base safely, leading the Hatters to a 6-5 road victory over BYU on Wednesday afternoon. Despite battling the cold, Stetson extended its winning streak to four games and secured its fourth win over a Power 5 team this season. Lorenzo Meola, the hero of Sunday's win over Mount St. Mary's, came through again, hitting a solo home run in the first inning—his second straight game with a home run.
Senior Ty Van Dyke (1-0) earned the win in relief for Stetson (8-5). The right-hander pitched 1.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits, with two walks and four strikeouts. Senior Dylan Jacobs started the game, tossing 4.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits, with two walks and three strikeouts. Overall, the Stetson pitching staff struck out 12 BYU batters.
The Hatters got on the board early, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. Meola led off with a solo shot to right-center, putting Stetson up 1-0.
The Cougars were unable to answer, and Stetson added another run in the second inning. Junior Jordan Taylor, who reached with a triple, came around to score, making it 2-0.
Stetson kept BYU scoreless and extended its lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning with a three-run rally. Junior Landon Russell contributed a two-run triple to deep center field, highlighting the frame.
BYU began to chip away, closing the gap to 5-2, but Stetson added an insurance run in the ninth. Junior Landon Moran's RBI single made it 6-2 in favor of the Hatters. BYU scored three more runs before the game ended, but closer Zane Coppersmith struck out the final two batters to seal the 6-5 win.
The Hatters continue their four-game series against BYU at Miller Park in Provo, UT, on Thursday at 5:00 PM.
