Stetson Softball Completes Comebacks to go 2-0 On Day 2 of the John B. Invite

DELAND, Fla. -- The Stetson Hatters staged a thrilling 9-6 comeback win over South Carolina Upstate and followed it up with a dramatic 7-6 walk-off victory over Bryant in nine innings.

In the rematch against USC Upstate, Ava Braswell took the mound for Stetson. She kept the Spartans scoreless in the first inning, and the Hatters quickly struck in the bottom half. Addison Foster led off with a walk and stole second. With two outs, Foster advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Nadia English brought her home with a single up the middle.

Braswell continued to dominate, holding Upstate scoreless through the second and third innings. The Hatters extended their lead in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs for a 5-0 advantage. With two outs, Annabella McClerren sprinted out of the batter's box on a dropped third strike to keep the inning alive. Dylan Anthony followed with a single to right-center, and Riley Venn cleared the bases with a two-run double. Gia Napoli kept the rally going with a single, and Foster drove in two more with a single up the middle, making it 5-0.

Upstate responded with six runs in the top of the fifth, but Stetson refused to back down. The Hatters answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. Anthony drew a walk and Napoli followed suit. With two outs, Madelyn Synoracki drew a walk to load the bases. The free bases just kept coming as Eppley was then walked and Emily Santana was hit by a pitch to make it 7-6. English added on two insurance runs with a single up the middle to give the Hatters a 9-6 lead.

Kulczyski shut down the Spartans in the sixth and seventh inning securing the 9-6 win for the Hatters. She earned her third win, throwing 2.1 innings while only allowing one hit.
Kulczyski went right back out to the mound for Stetson against Bryant as she got the start in the circle. The Bulldogs tallyed two runs in the second inning and another in the third. After giving up the third run, Stetson turned to Caitlyn Mullen, who kept the Hatters in the game with 4.2 strong innings, allowing just three hits and striking out one.
Stetson got on the board in the fourth inning. English led off with a triple to deep center field, and McClerren singled to bring her home, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The score remained 3-1 until the seventh inning, when Hayley Arnold entered the game with two outs and runners on second and third. She induced an inning-ending groundout to keep the Hatters within two runs.

In the bottom of the seventh, Synoracki pinch-hit and reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. Foster followed with a triple to left-center, bringing Synoracki in to score. Eppley then tied the game at 3 with a sacrifice fly, sending the game to extra innings.

The eighth inning was scoreless, but in the top of the ninth, Bryant scored three runs to take a 6-3 lead. However, Stetson wasn't done yet. Napoli, the runner starting on second, advanced to third after back-to-back walks to Foster and Eppley, loading the bases. Weller doubled to right-center, bringing in two runs to cut the lead to 6-5. English then hit a ground ball and Eppley was able to beat the throw home tying the game at six. After English stole second, Irianis Garcia hit a bullet up the middle to bring in Weller for a walk off single.

Arnold earned her sixth win of the season, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks, with two strikeouts.
Stetson will look to continue their momentum into Sunday, March 9 with a rematch against Bryant at noon.
