Scanlan and Kornacki Tally 5 Goals in 16-14 Loss to Queens

DeLand, Fla. – Katie Kornacki and Miya Scanlan each netted five goals, but Stetson came up just short in a 16-14 loss to Queens on Thursday afternoon.

Kaitlin Pani opened the scoring just 30 seconds into the game, giving the Hatters an early 1-0 lead. Queens answered with two quick goals before Scanlan tied things up at 2-2. After the Royals regained the lead, Kornacki responded to even the score again at 3-3. However, Queens closed out the first quarter with three unanswered goals to take a 6-3 lead.

The Hatters came out strong in the second quarter, scoring three straight to tie the game at 6-6, with Scanlan netting two and Pani adding another. Despite the rally, Queens regrouped and scored three more to take a 9-6 lead into halftime.

Kornacki opened the second half with a goal, but the Royals extended their lead again. Scanlan responded with back-to-back goals to pull Stetson within one. Queens added two more before Kornacki struck again with 12 seconds left in the third, narrowing the gap to 13-11.

Kathleen Nichols got the Hatters within one just 40 seconds into the fourth quarter, but Queens quickly stretched the lead back to three. The teams traded goals down the stretch, with Kornacki and Maya Sellinger scoring for the Hatters, but Stetson ultimately came up short, falling 16-14.

Stetson will be back in action on Tuesday, April 15, when they travel to Gainesville to face Florida at 6:00 PM.
