Gonzalez's 11 K Outing Leads Stetson Past North Florida 3-1

DELAND, Fla. – Senior left-hander Jonathan Gonzalez was once again dominant on Saturday, striking out 11 over 8.2 innings to lead Stetson to a 3-1 victory over North Florida at Melching Field. The performance marked a season-high in strikeouts for Gonzalez, who matched his career-best total for the third time. Stetson extends their win streak to six straight as they have now won 12 of their last 13 games.

Gonzalez (5-1) allowed just one run on five hits, did not issue a walk, and came within one out of his second complete game of the year. Though he's gone the distance once before, Saturday's outing was his longest of the season.

After erupting for 15 runs on Friday, the Hatters (23-13, 12-2 ASUN) managed a more modest six-hit effort in game two of the series. Sophomore second baseman Juan De La Cruz led the way, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Stetson also drew six walks and stole five bases, including a key swipe from Nelphie Lopez, who scored an insurance run after coming off the bench with a pinch-hit single.

Stetson opened the scoring in the fifth inning when De La Cruz delivered an RBI single to score Isaiah Barkett from second. In the seventh, the Hatters extended their lead with an RBI triple from De La Cruz, who then came home on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

North Florida scratched across a run in the ninth, but with two outs, Stetson turned to closer Ty Van Dyke, who closed the door for the win.

Stetson will go for the series sweep on Sunday, returning to Melching Field for the weekend finale against the Ospreys at 1:00 PM. The Hatters won't return home again until April 29, beginning a road stretch following tomorrow's contest.
