Fort Myers, Fla. – Amber Chumley launched two home runs, including a grand slam, to power the Hatters to a doubleheader split against Florida Gulf Coast on Friday night. After falling 11-3 in game one, Stetson bounced back in dominant fashion with a 9-3 win in game two.
In the opener, Ava Braswell got the start for Stetson, tossing 2.2 innings before Caitlin Mullen came on in relief to throw three innings. FGCU built an early seven-run lead through the first four innings. The Hatters broke through in the sixth when Devon Weller crushed a three-run homer to cut the deficit to 7-3. That would be all for the Stetson offense in game one, as the Eagles went on to claim an 11-3 win.
Game two saw a strong performance in the circle from Kennedy Temples, who earned the win after allowing two runs on five hits over four innings. Caitlyn Kulczyski closed out the game with three innings of one-hit, one-run relief.
Stetson came out swinging in the nightcap, scoring twice in the top of the first on a two-run shot by Chumley following a Kami Eppley single. Addison Foster added an RBI single in the second to extend the lead to 3-0. In the fourth, Gia Napoli sent an opposite-field solo homer over the wall to make it 4-0.
After FGCU plated two runs in the fifth, the Hatters responded in a big way in the sixth. Madelyn Synoracki singled, Napoli reached on an error, and Foster added another RBI single. Eppley was hit by a pitch to load the bases, setting the stage for Chumley's grand slam to dead center, giving Stetson a commanding 9-2 lead. The Hatters closed out the game and secured the win at 9-3.
Chumley finished the day 3-for-7 with two home runs and six RBIs. Napoli went 2-for-6 with a homer and an RBI, while Foster contributed a 3-for-8 effort at the plate with two RBIs.
The Hatters and Eagles will square off in the rubber match on Saturday, April 19 at 1:00 p.m. A win would give Stetson the season series.
