DELAND, Fla. – Seniors Jonathan Gonzalez and Justin Solimine combined for a shutout on Saturday night as Stetson blanked West Georgia 5-0 at Melching Field. The win marked the Hatters' third shutout of the season and their first since a 1-0 victory over Queens on April 5.
Gonzalez (7-2) earned the win with another dominant performance, tossing seven scoreless innings while allowing four hits, walking one, and striking out 10, his fourth double-digit strikeout game of the year. Solimine closed the door with two strong innings out of the bullpen, giving up one hit, one walk, and striking out two.
Stetson (31-16, 20-3 ASUN) out-hit West Georgia 9-5, with every starter reaching base. Landon Russell led the offense, going 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his fourth of the season and first since March 12. Landon Moran added a 2-for-4 night with a double and two RBIs. The Hatters were active on the bases as well, stealing five bags, including three by Isaiah Barkett, tying his career high.
Stetson took the lead in the first inning when Barkett scored on a Moran groundout. The Hatters added two more runs in the third on back-to-back RBI singles from Moran and Jordan Taylor. Russell's sixth-inning two-out two-run blast, which followed a double by Evan Griffis, all but sealed the win.
Stetson will look for its fifth conference series sweep on Sunday, with the series finale against the Wolves set for noon at Melching Field.
