Hatters Use Second-Quarter Surge to Take Down Central Arkansas, 70-64

CONWAY, AR. Stetson Women's Basketball erupted for 27 points in the second quarter Saturday afternoon and held on late to earn a 70-64 ASUN road win over Central Arkansas at the Farris Center.

The Hatters (13-8, 6-4 ASUN) scored 40 points in the paint, received 22 points from the bench and finished with 18 assists on 29 made field goals. Stetson also forced 17 turnovers and turned those takeaways into 22 points to help secure its second straight road victory.

Central Arkansas (11-10, 4-5 ASUN) opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers, but Stetson answered with a 7-0 run midway through the first quarter to take control. Cameron Thomas sparked the rally with a three-pointer, and Promise Keshi followed with a pair of finishes inside as the Hatters pulled in front. After the Sugar Bears briefly tied the game late, Aleah Sorrentino closed the quarter with a layup in the final seconds to give Stetson an 11-9 edge after one.

Stetson's momentum carried into the second quarter, where the Hatters delivered their best stretch of the afternoon. Central Arkansas tied the game early, but Stetson responded with a decisive run fueled by interior scoring, ball movement and bench production. Candela Garcia-Escribano provided a major lift with multiple finishes in the lane and a three-pointer, while Sorrentino and Keshi added baskets around the rim as the Hatters outscored the Sugar Bears 27-11 in the period. Eva Bradshaw capped the half with a transition three in the final seconds, sending Stetson into the break with a commanding 38-20 advantage.

The Hatters continued to attack inside to start the third, pushing the lead to as many as 23 early in the frame. Central Arkansas found a rhythm from the perimeter to chip away, but Stetson answered with timely buckets, including a Rose Caso three and a late Garcia-Escribano tip-in to maintain separation. The Sugar Bears trimmed the margin late, but the Hatters carried a 56-44 lead into the fourth quarter.

Central Arkansas made one final push in the closing minutes, knocking down a pair of threes to close the gap, but Stetson stayed composed down the stretch. Mary McMillan delivered key plays on both ends and helped steady the offense, while Sorrentino finished through contact late to keep the Hatters in front as Stetson closed out the 70-64 win.
