DeLAND, Fla. — Stetson men's soccer continues a three-match road stretch Saturday night as the Hatters head to Nashville for an ASUN matchup against Lipscomb. Kickoff from the Lipscomb Soccer Complex is scheduled for 8 p.m.
The Hatters enter the weekend at 2-6-2 overall and 1-3 in conference play following a narrow 1-0 setback at North Florida. Despite the result, Stetson once again remained within striking distance throughout the night and continued to generate opportunities after halftime, putting seven of its 11 shots on the board over the final 45 minutes.
Saturday presents another important test in a tightly contested conference schedule. Three of Stetson's first four ASUN matches have been decided by a single goal, while the Hatters have allowed just three goals through 360 minutes of league action. Lipscomb enters the weekend at 3-5-1 overall and 2-1 in the ASUN, putting another valuable three points on the line as the conference race moves into October.

PRESSING FORWARD
Stetson heads to Nashville looking to turn another stretch of sustained attacking pressure into points after coming up one goal short at North Florida.
The Hatters spent much of the second half searching for an equalizer against the Ospreys. Stetson generated seven of its 11 shots after halftime and put together an extended stretch of pressure early in the period, but the breakthrough never arrived in a 1-0 decision.
The loss ended a run of seven consecutive matches in which Stetson had outshot its opponent, but it did little to change one of the clearest trends surrounding the Hatters this season. Stetson has continued to find ways to get forward, finishing with double-digit attempts in eight consecutive matches and owning a 122-90 advantage in shots through 10 games.
That stretch began with 15 attempts at Coastal Carolina and has included 15 against West Florida, a season-high 16 against Presbyterian and 13 in the 1-1 draw against UCF. Even in Saturday's loss at North Florida, the Hatters generated 11 attempts and earned six corner kicks.
The challenge now becomes turning that volume into more opportunities on frame. Stetson has put 37 of its 122 attempts on goal, and its nine goals have come on a .074 shooting percentage. The Hatters have shown what the attack can look like when those chances begin to fall, scoring six times across wins over West Florida and Presbyterian earlier in the homestand.
Creating the Chances
122 SHOTS • 90 ALLOWED
Stetson has reached double-digit attempts in eight consecutive matches and has outshot its opponents by 32 attempts for the season.
Mello Stands Tall
While the Hatters continue searching for the finishing touch at one end of the field, freshman goalkeeper Murillo Mello has helped keep the margin small at the other.
Mello enters Saturday after combining for nine saves while allowing just two goals across 180 minutes against UCF and North Florida. He made four stops in the 1-1 draw against the Knights, keeping UCF off the board throughout the second half while Stetson worked its way back from a halftime deficit.
Four days later in Jacksonville, Mello followed with a season-high five saves against North Florida. Four of those came after halftime, helping keep the Hatters within one goal as they pushed for an equalizer.
The Orlando product has now started each of Stetson's last five matches and six times overall. Across 495 minutes in goal, Mello has allowed six goals, with five of his six starts ending with the opposition scoring no more than once.
His first collegiate clean sheet came against West Florida on Sept. 12, when Mello made two saves as the Hatters earned a 2-0 victory. Since then, he has continued to establish himself in goal as Stetson moves deeper into conference play.
Last Two Matches
9 SAVES • 2 GOALS ALLOWED • 180 MINUTES
Mello recorded four saves against UCF before posting a season-high five at North Florida.
IN THE THICK OF ASUN PLAY
Four matches into ASUN play, very little has separated Stetson from its conference opponents.
The Hatters opened league action at Bellarmine on Sept. 5 and controlled much of the opportunity battle, finishing with a 12-6 advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. One Bellarmine goal, however, was enough to decide a 1-0 match.
Stetson answered one week later with its most complete conference performance to date. Afonso Conde opened the scoring against West Florida before Matthew Perez provided the second goal, while Mello and the back line completed a 2-0 clean sheet. The Hatters finished that night with a 15-6 advantage in shots and put eight attempts on frame.
The margins have tightened again since. Queens escaped DeLand with a 1-0 victory despite being outshot 12-5, and North Florida followed with another one-goal result last Saturday.
Through those four conference matches, Stetson has outshot its ASUN opponents 50-31 and allowed just three goals across 360 minutes. The Hatters have surrendered only 7.8 shots per league match, while three of their four conference games have been decided by a single goal.
That puts additional importance on Saturday's trip to Nashville. Lipscomb enters with six conference points through three matches, while Stetson sits on three through four, giving the Hatters another opportunity to gain ground as the schedule moves into its second half.
Through Four ASUN Matches
50-31 SHOT ADVANTAGE • 2 GOALS SCORED • 3 GOALS ALLOWED
Three of Stetson's first four conference matches have been decided by one goal.
spreading THE ATTACK
Stetson's attacking production has continued to come from several different places as the Hatters move deeper into conference play.
Six different players have accounted for Stetson's nine goals this season, with Matthew Perez, Afonso Conde and William Mills sharing the team lead with two apiece. Justin Blanco, Maurice Hauser and Mauricio Restrepo have also found the back of the net.
Perez has been the most productive of the group with a team-high five points on two goals and one assist. The freshman also leads Stetson with 17 shots and eight shots on goal, highlighted by a three-point performance against West Florida and the second-half equalizer in the Hatters' 1-1 draw with UCF.
Conde provided another important stretch during the recent homestand, scoring the game winner against West Florida before doing the same three days later against Presbyterian. Mills has scored twice as well, finding the net at UTRGV before adding a goal in the 4-1 victory over Presbyterian.
The contributions have extended beyond the goalscorers. Junior Essengue leads the Hatters with two assists, while 12 different players have recorded at least one point through the opening 10 matches.
That balance has given Stetson several different options going forward, with no player accounting for more than two of the team's nine goals entering Saturday.
Scouting the Bisons
Waiting in Nashville is a Lipscomb side that has experienced an up-and-down start overall but has found success since the beginning of ASUN play.
The Bisons enter Saturday at 3-5-1 overall and 2-1 in conference action under longtime head coach Charles Morrow, now in his 22nd season leading the program. After opening the year with a 1-1 draw at UAB, Lipscomb went through a difficult early stretch before beginning to turn things around at home.
That turnaround began with a 3-1 victory over Queens in the ASUN opener. Lipscomb suffered its first conference loss in a 1-0 decision at Central Arkansas but responded on the road, shutting out Jacksonville 1-0 to improve to 2-1 in league play.
The Bisons then stepped back outside the conference and picked up one of their strongest results of the season, defeating Kentucky 2-1 in Nashville. Lipscomb carried that momentum into a difficult road test at North Carolina last Saturday, where the Tar Heels handed the Bisons a 3-1 loss.
Through nine matches, Lipscomb has scored 11 goals on 85 shots. The Bisons have put 39 attempts on target, meaning nearly 46 percent of their shots have tested the opposing goalkeeper. While Lipscomb has been outshot 115-85 overall, its ability to make those opportunities count has helped produce three wins and a pair of conference victories.
Lipscomb Snapshot
2-1 ASUN • 39 shots on goal • 2-1 at home
There has not been one player responsible for carrying the Lipscomb attack. Instead, the production has been spread throughout the lineup.
Jorge Morejon, Tobias Sosa, Yonis Kireh and Alejandro Valcarce Marin enter Saturday tied for the team lead with two goals apiece. Morejon has added an assist to lead the Bisons with five points and also sits atop the team with 15 shots.
James Sasere has played a different role in that attack, leading Lipscomb with three assists. The balance gives Stetson several players to account for rather than allowing the Hatter back line to focus on one primary scoring threat.
In goal, sophomore Alex Kara has handled the majority of the work. Kara has made seven starts and recorded 26 saves while posting a .743 save percentage. He was named ASUN Goalkeeper of the Week after helping Lipscomb earn its 1-0 road shutout at Jacksonville.
Home field has also provided the Bisons with some early success. Lipscomb enters Saturday 2-1 at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex, with both victories coming in its last two home appearances against Queens and Kentucky.
Volume Meets Efficiency
The numbers point to two different approaches to generating offense Saturday night.
Stetson has consistently created opportunities through volume. The Hatters average 12.2 shots per game and own a 122-90 advantage over their opponents for the season. Lipscomb, meanwhile, averages 9.4 attempts and has been outshot 115-85.
Where the Bisons have held an advantage is efficiency. Lipscomb has scored 11 times on its 85 attempts, converting nearly 13 percent of its shots. Stetson has nine goals on 122 attempts, with the Hatters converting 7.4 percent.
There is a similar contrast when looking at shots on goal. Lipscomb has placed 39 of its 85 attempts on frame, a rate of nearly 46 percent. Stetson has put 37 of its 122 shots on target, just over 30 percent.
For the Hatters, that creates a fairly clear challenge. Stetson has consistently found its way into attacking positions and has limited opponents to just nine shots per match at the other end. Turning more of those opportunities into shots on frame could be the difference against a Lipscomb side that has needed fewer chances to find the back of the net.

Familiar Territory
Saturday will also renew a series that has produced its share of close finishes over the years.
Stetson holds a 13-9-3 advantage in the all-time series, with the programs most recently meeting during the 2024 season in Nashville. That night produced another tight contest between the Hatters and Bisons.
Charles Ahl broke a scoreless tie in the 71st minute to give Stetson a 1-0 advantage, and the Hatters remained in front deep into the closing moments. Lipscomb eventually found the equalizer with just 20 seconds remaining, leaving the sides with a 1-1 draw.
The result followed a 3-1 Stetson victory in DeLand in 2023. Lipscomb earned a 2-1 road win one season earlier, giving each program a victory and a draw across the last three meetings.
Saturday will be Stetson's first trip back to the Lipscomb Soccer Complex since that 2024 draw and its latest opportunity to add another chapter to a series that dates back more than two decades.
