Hatters Return to the Road to Face Morehead State

DeLAND, Fla. — Stetson Football returns to the road Saturday afternoon as the Hatters travel to Morehead, Kentucky, for a Pioneer Football League matchup against Morehead State at Phil Simms Stadium.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. with the game streaming live on ESPN+. Stetson and Morehead State enter the weekend with identical 1-6 overall records and 0-3 marks in PFL play as both programs search for their first conference victory of the season.

Both teams enter Saturday looking to bounce back from close conference losses last weekend. Stetson rallied in the fourth quarter and took the lead in the final minute before falling 47-43 to Presbyterian, while Morehead State pushed Davidson to overtime before dropping a 34-31 road decision.

Stetson enters the weekend holding a 5-4 advantage in the all-time series and has won the last two meetings between the programs, including a 21-14 victory in DeLand last season.

Offense Building Momentum

Stetson heads to Kentucky following one of its most productive offensive performances of the season and its highest-scoring effort against a Division I opponent.

The Hatters piled up 481 yards of total offense against Presbyterian while averaging 8.3 yards per play. Stetson threw for a season-high 349 yards, added 132 on the ground and scored six touchdowns, including four during a furious fourth-quarter rally.

That performance continued a three-game surge for a passing attack that has become the centerpiece of the Stetson offense. The Hatters have thrown for at least 334 yards in three consecutive games, producing 335 against Marist, 334 at St. Thomas and 349 against Presbyterian.

Stetson has totaled more than 1,000 passing yards during that stretch and enters Saturday averaging 272.3 passing yards per game. That production ranks second among Pioneer Football League teams and also places the Hatters among the national leaders in passing offense.

The Hatters have completed 177 passes through seven games, the second-most in the PFL, while throwing just four interceptions in 282 attempts. Stetson's 62.8 completion percentage also ranks among the top marks in the conference.

Stetson Among The Leaders
2ND IN PFL PASSING OFFENSE   |   5TH IN PFL TOTAL OFFENSE
ROGERS: 9TH FCS IN RECEPTIONS/GAME   |   JONES: T-13TH FCS IN RECEIVING TDS
Wyatt Rogers averages 6.43 receptions per game   •   Shawne Jones has six receiving touchdowns
Brett Gonda ranks eighth nationally in punting   •   Stetson averages 378.9 yards of offense per game
Von Grote Coming Off Career Performance

Junior quarterback Thomas von Grote enters Saturday following a career afternoon against Presbyterian.

Von Grote completed 23 of 28 passes for a career-high 345 yards and five touchdowns while also adding a 5-yard rushing score. His five passing touchdowns were the most by a Hatter against a PFL opponent since Brady Meitz threw five against Davidson on Nov. 5, 2022.

The performance gave von Grote six total touchdowns on the afternoon and continued a productive run in conference play. He has now thrown multiple touchdown passes in three consecutive games, accounting for nine passing touchdowns during that stretch.

Through seven games, von Grote has completed 156 of 249 attempts for 1,740 yards and 14 touchdowns against just four interceptions. He is averaging nearly 249 passing yards per game while completing 62.7 percent of his attempts.

Von Grote has also protected the football at a high level throughout the season. His four interceptions have come across 249 pass attempts, while he has thrown at least one touchdown pass in six consecutive games dating back to Stetson's win over Webber International.

Rogers Continues To Set The Pace

Senior captain Wyatt Rogers remains one of the most productive receivers in both the Pioneer Football League and the FCS.

Rogers enters Saturday with 45 receptions for 540 yards and two touchdowns. His 6.43 receptions per game rank second in the PFL and ninth nationally, while his 77.1 receiving yards per game rank fourth among conference receivers.

His consistency has been particularly impressive over the last month. Rogers has recorded nine receptions in three consecutive games, totaling 27 catches for 302 yards over that stretch.

He followed nine catches for 103 yards against Marist with nine receptions for 94 yards and a touchdown at St. Thomas before producing another nine-catch performance for 105 yards against Presbyterian.

Rogers has now reached at least five receptions in six straight games and has surpassed 90 receiving yards in each of the last three. His season also includes a career-best 123 receiving yards and a touchdown against Webber International.

Jones Keeps Finding The End Zone

While Rogers has provided volume and consistency, junior Shawne Jones has emerged as Stetson's most dangerous scoring threat through the air.

Jones has caught 23 passes for 250 yards and six touchdowns despite appearing in only five games. His six receiving scores are tied for second in the Pioneer Football League and tied for 13th nationally.

Five of those touchdowns have come during Stetson's last three contests. Jones caught a pair of scores against Marist, added another at St. Thomas and hauled in two touchdown passes against Presbyterian.

He opened Stetson's fourth-quarter comeback last weekend with a 13-yard touchdown reception and also scored on a 41-yard connection in the second quarter. Jones finished the afternoon with four catches for 55 yards and the two scores.

His six touchdowns have come on just 23 receptions, meaning more than one out of every four catches this season has resulted in a touchdown.

More Weapons Emerging

Stetson's passing production has extended well beyond its two nationally ranked receivers.

Landon Farco enters Saturday with 26 receptions for 308 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those scores came against Presbyterian, including a 14-yard touchdown reception with 51 seconds remaining that briefly gave the Hatters a 43-40 lead.

Troy Flowers has continued to impact the offense in multiple ways. Flowers has totaled 295 receiving yards and 291 rushing yards this season, giving him 586 yards from scrimmage. He delivered one of Stetson's biggest plays of the year last Saturday when he took a von Grote pass 75 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Flowers finished the Presbyterian game with five receptions for 120 yards and a touchdown while adding 63 yards on 13 carries, giving him 183 yards from scrimmage.

Anthony Benzija has also provided versatility from the tight end position. Against Presbyterian, the senior converted a fake punt into a 34-yard rush and later completed a two-point conversion pass to Gunner Chenier.

Gonda Among The Nation's Best

Sophomore punter Brett Gonda continues to establish himself as one of the top specialists in the Pioneer Football League and the FCS.

Gonda enters Saturday averaging 45.5 yards per punt, which ranks second in the PFL and eighth nationally. He has punted 35 times for 1,592 yards, with 12 punts traveling at least 50 yards.

Last weekend against Presbyterian, Gonda produced his best single-game average of the season. He punted six times for 321 yards, averaging 53.5 yards per kick, with four punts traveling at least 50 yards.

The afternoon was highlighted by an 80-yard punt, Stetson's longest of the season and one of the longest punts in Division I football this year. Gonda has now recorded punts of at least 60 yards in three consecutive conference games, following a 66-yarder against Marist and a 60-yard punt at St. Thomas.

Defense Creating More Opportunities

Stetson's defense enters Saturday after producing its first multi-interception performance of the season.

Julian Sampson and Jahyden Clark each recorded interceptions early against Presbyterian, giving the Hatters four takeaways through the air this season. Clark's interception came on an athletic one-handed grab in the second quarter, while Sampson's pick stopped another Blue Hose possession.

The pair joined Dylan Kelly and Corrado DeSantis as Hatters with interceptions this season.

Linebacker Shug Bentley continues to lead Stetson in tackles after another productive performance last weekend. Bentley recorded a team-high 13 tackles against Presbyterian, including a half-sack, and now has 52 stops through seven games.

Bentley ranks among the PFL leaders at 7.4 tackles per game, while Kelly is averaging 7.5 tackles per appearance. Stetson totaled five tackles for loss and a sack against Presbyterian and has recorded 33 tackles behind the line of scrimmage this season.

Last Time Out

Stetson nearly completed a dramatic comeback last Saturday in a 47-43 Homecoming loss to Presbyterian at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium.

The Hatters trailed 24-15 entering the fourth quarter before the offense erupted for 28 points over the final 10 minutes.

Von Grote opened the rally by finding Jones for a 13-yard touchdown with 10:08 remaining. Less than two minutes later, von Grote escaped for a 5-yard rushing touchdown to give Stetson its first lead of the afternoon at 29-27.

Presbyterian responded with two scores of its own to regain a 40-29 advantage, but the Hatters were far from finished.

On Stetson's next possession, von Grote connected with Flowers for a 75-yard touchdown, the Hatters' longest scoring pass since their victory over Webber International. Stetson then forced a punt and drove the field again, with von Grote finding Farco for a 14-yard touchdown with 51 seconds remaining.

The score gave Stetson a 43-40 lead, but Presbyterian answered with the game-winning touchdown with 19 seconds left.

Von Grote finished with 345 passing yards and accounted for six touchdowns. Flowers totaled 183 yards from scrimmage, Rogers caught nine passes for 105 yards, Jones scored twice and Farco caught both of his receptions for touchdowns.

Defensively, Bentley recorded 13 tackles, while Sampson and Clark each intercepted a pass.

Scouting Morehead State

Morehead State welcomes Stetson to Phil Simms Stadium with a 1-6 overall record and an 0-3 mark in Pioneer Football League play. The Eagles will be playing their annual Homecoming game and enter Saturday looking to snap a five-game losing streak.

Despite the record, Morehead State has shown signs of offensive improvement over the last two weeks. After enduring a stretch of 38 consecutive possessions without an offensive touchdown, the Eagles have turned nine of their last 21 possessions into points while scoring eight touchdowns across games against Dayton and Davidson.

Morehead State scored 28 points at Dayton before producing 31 last weekend in an overtime loss at Davidson. The Eagles finished with 380 yards against the Wildcats, including 274 through the air.

For the season, Morehead State averages 354.7 yards and 26.6 points per game. The Eagles rank third in the PFL in passing offense at 254.6 yards per game, setting up a matchup between two of the conference's top three passing attacks. Morehead State has thrown 15 touchdown passes through seven games and averages 14.4 yards per completion.

Bryce Patterson has provided a spark since moving into the starting quarterback role. Patterson has thrown for 624 yards and three touchdowns over his last two games while rushing for three more scores. He completed 21 of 30 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns against Davidson after throwing for 350 yards at Dayton.

Wide receiver Anthony Ice has been Morehead State's most consistent offensive weapon. Ice has 36 receptions for 559 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 79.9 receiving yards per game. He ranks third in the PFL in receiving yards per game and has recorded three 100-yard performances.

Cannon Dinger gives the Eagles another vertical threat with 27 catches for 420 yards and four touchdowns. His 15.6 yards per reception leads Morehead State's regular receiving rotation, and his season includes an 83-yard reception at Dayton.

On defense, safety Sidney Webb has been one of the PFL's most active tacklers. Webb has recorded 53 tackles and is averaging 7.6 per game, ranking among the conference leaders. He has posted double-digit tackles in three consecutive games and also owns two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.

Morehead State has recorded six interceptions as a team, with two returned for touchdowns. Quinton Griffin has also made an impact on special teams, blocking both a punt and a field goal this season.

The Eagles have been one of the PFL's most disciplined teams, ranking near the top of the conference in fewest penalties and penalty yards. Sophomore kicker Jordan Price has also been perfect this season, converting all 20 PAT attempts and all four field-goal tries.

The matchup will feature two teams that have relied heavily on the passing game. Stetson ranks second in the PFL at 272.0 passing yards per game, while Morehead State follows in third at 254.6. The Hatters have thrown only four interceptions this season compared to 10 for the Eagles.

Stetson leads the all-time series 5-4 and has won each of the last two meetings. The Hatters earned a 21-14 victory in DeLand last season. Morehead State, however, has historically defended its home field well in the series, owning a 4-1 record against Stetson in Morehead.
