Hatters Drop Home Match to Queens

DELAND, Fla. — Stetson volleyball mounted a late push in the third set Sunday against Queens but fell 3-0 (17-25, 17-25, 22-25) at Insight Credit Union Arena.

Soraya Teston led Stetson with a career-high nine kills and three blocks. Sofia Torcello added eight kills, while Jannelize Perez recorded a team-high 14 digs.

The Hatters battled to keep the opening set close, tying the score at 6-6 behind a Vanessa Shevchenko service ace and a Karsu Bayraktar kill. Stetson added kills from Torcello, Teston and Bayraktar but was unable to overcome Queens' late run as the Royals took the set 25-17.

In the second set, Stetson responded after Queens used a five-point run to build a 15-7 lead. A Torcello kill, a combined block from Shevchenko and Kayla Balfour, and a Balfour kill helped the Hatters cut the deficit to 16-11. Queens maintained its advantage to take the set 25-17.

Stetson's strongest stretch came in the third set, when the Hatters turned a 6-4 deficit into an 11-6 lead with seven consecutive points. Teston recorded two kills during the run, while Vitoria Stedile added a service ace. After Queens moved ahead 23-18, the Hatters answered with four straight points, including back-to-back Teston kills, to pull within 23-22. Queens took the final two points to secure the set 25-22.
