SERIES: FIRST MEETING
A WINNING START TO THE DEVORE ERA
Stetson wasted little time opening a new chapter in program history, defeating Flagler 75-52 on Monday night to give first-year head coach Melissa DeVore her first victory leading the Hatters. After entering halftime with a narrow 33-30 advantage, Stetson found another gear in the second half, outscoring the Saints 42-22 over the final two quarters to secure the season-opening win.
The Hatters made their mark defensively, forcing 25 Flagler turnovers and collecting 15 steals while building a decisive 29-9 advantage in points off turnovers. Stetson held the Saints to 30.2 percent shooting from the floor and just 13.3 percent from beyond the arc, using its defensive pressure to generate transition opportunities and establish separation after halftime.
Offensively, Stetson shot 45.5 percent from the field and connected on eight 3-pointers, with three Hatters finishing in double figures. Candela Garcia-Escribano led the way with a game-high 21 points, while freshman Desireck Nieves contributed 18 and sophomore Sophie Locatelli added 16. The trio accounted for 55 of the team's 75 points, providing an encouraging early look at a group stepping into expanded roles under DeVore.
OPENING NIGHT BY THE NUMBERS
75 POINTS • 15 STEALS • 25 FORCED TURNOVERS
Stetson outscored Flagler 42-22 in the second half to earn DeVore's first victory as head coach.
HATTERS MAKE AN EARLY IMPACT
Garcia-Escribano delivered an impressive all-around performance in the opener, scoring a career-high 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting while adding six rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks. After primarily serving in a reserve role last season, the junior forward made the most of her first start of the new campaign, setting the tone on both ends of the floor and helping Stetson maintain control throughout the second half.
Nieves provided one of the night's biggest highlights in her collegiate debut, scoring 18 points while connecting on four of her eight attempts from beyond the arc. The Puerto Rico native caught fire in the third quarter, knocking down four 3-pointers to help the Hatters turn a three-point halftime advantage into a 13-point lead entering the fourth. Nieves also collected four steals and played 32 minutes in her first appearance in the Green and White.
Locatelli rounded out Stetson's double-figure scorers with 16 points, knocking down six field goals and two 3-pointers while adding three assists and two steals. The sophomore guard helped put the game away late, connecting on consecutive triples in the fourth quarter as the Hatters closed the contest on a 10-0 run.
Stetson also received contributions throughout its rotation, particularly on the glass. Senior forward Favour Anyaele pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while Jorah Eppley added seven boards and two steals. Sierra Driessen contributed four points and three assists off the bench, giving DeVore several encouraging performances as the Hatters prepare for a significant increase in competition.
HATTERS TO WATCH
GARCIA-ESCRIBANO: 21 PTS • NIEVES: 18 PTS • LOCATELLI: 16 PTS
Stetson's leading trio combined for 55 points in Monday's victory, while Garcia-Escribano and Nieves each recorded four steals.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Louisville enters Wednesday's matchup ranked No. 7 nationally and coming off a commanding 119-47 victory over Bellarmine in its season opener Monday afternoon. Led by longtime head coach Jeff Walz, the Cardinals showcased their depth and offensive efficiency, placing seven players in double figures while shooting 54.1 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from beyond the arc.
The Cardinals wasted little time establishing control against Bellarmine, exploding for 44 first-quarter points and building a 72-21 advantage by halftime. Louisville finished with 46 made field goals, 12 3-pointers and 27 assists while committing just six turnovers. Defensively, the Cardinals were equally disruptive, forcing 35 turnovers and collecting 23 steals while limiting the Knights to 30.2 percent shooting.
Sophomore guard Tajianna Roberts led Louisville with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting, adding four steals in just over 19 minutes of action. Imari Berry and Amiya Joyner followed with 14 points apiece, while Carys Baker contributed 13 points and four assists. Zamareya Jones also played a major role in the victory, recording 11 points, nine assists and six steals without committing a turnover.
Louisville's depth presents another challenge for the Hatters, with 13 Cardinals seeing action in the opener and seven reaching double figures. Freshman Ariyana Cradle added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds, while Grace Mbugua contributed 10 points, five rebounds and a block. The Cardinals also connected on 12 shots from beyond the arc, led by three from Berry and two each from Baker and Reagan Bender.
Wednesday's contest will provide an early measuring stick for Stetson against one of the nation's premier programs. Both teams found success generating turnovers in their openers, with the Hatters collecting 15 steals and the Cardinals recording 23. Ball security, defensive execution and the ability to handle Louisville's depth and pressure will be important factors as Stetson looks to build on its opening-night performance.
