DeLand, Fla. — Stetson University improved to 8-1 on the season Sunday with a 9-2 victory over the University of Maine at Patricia Wilson Field, completing a sweep of the Hatter Classic. The 8-1 start marks the Hatters' best opening to a season since 2017.
Stetson broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning, collecting three doubles and a home run as part of a 13-hit performance. Nicole Edmiaston extended her hitting streak to nine games, continuing her standout weekend at the plate.
Maine took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning after Madison Hand doubled and scored on Eviana Robles' RBI single. A wild pitch later allowed Robles to score.
The Hatters answered immediately in the bottom half of the fourth before the offense got hot in the fifth. Jahnnie Patterson sparked the rally with an RBI single to score Madison Quinn. Berkley Demetter followed with a two-run double to left-center, and Edmiaston capped the inning with a two-RBI single to put Stetson in front for good.
Mason Barclay added a two-run home run in the sixth to extend the lead and provide additional insurance.
Stetson's defense supported the offensive outburst, highlighted by a key double play that halted Maine's momentum. Irianis Garcia led the offense with three hits and an RBI, while Barclay finished with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Patterson scored twice and stole a base, and Demetter's two-out double proved pivotal in the decisive inning.
Jenna Johnston started in the circle, allowing two earned runs over 3 1/3 innings. Ava Braswell was strong in relief, tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and no walks to secure the win.
With the victory, the Hatters closed the weekend undefeated and continued their strong early-season momentum. Stetson will return to action Wednesday on the road at USF.
