DELAND, Fla. — Stetson delivered its most complete offensive performance of the young season Sunday afternoon, erupting for a season-high 21 hits in a 14-8 victory over Monmouth at Melching Field.
The 21-hit outburst marked the program's highest single-game total since May 16, 2014, and helped the Hatters improve to 3-5 on the year. Monmouth fell to 1-5.
From the first pitch, Stetson applied pressure.
Juan De la Cruz opened the bottom of the first with a ringing double to left-center and set the tone for a four-run frame. Renzo Gonzalez brought him home to open the scoring before Foster Apple and Yohann Dessureault followed with RBI doubles of their own. Freshman Samuel Fernandez capped the inning with an RBI single, giving the Hatters a 4-0 lead before Monmouth could settle in.
Stetson continued to stack quality at-bats in the second. Landon Russell, who collected three hits on the afternoon, scored from second on Apple's single to extend the lead to 5-0.
On the mound, sophomore Brayden Toro provided early stability. The right-hander attacked the zone, did not issue a walk, and struck out a season-high seven over five strong innings. At one point, Toro retired nine consecutive hitters, preventing any momentum shift as the offense continued to build its lead.
The Hatters broke the game open in the fourth.
Russell's aggressive baserunning forced a run across on a throw, Dessureault lined his second double of the day, and Fernandez delivered the loudest swing of the afternoon — a towering three-run home run to right-center, his second of the weekend. The five-run inning pushed the advantage to 10-0 and underscored Stetson's relentless approach at the plate.
Monmouth answered with two runs in the fifth, but the Hatters immediately responded. De la Cruz came around to score on Russell's RBI single to make it 11-2.
Dessureault added another highlight in the sixth, launching a solo home run — his first since 2024 and the longest home run hit by a Hatter this season — as Stetson stretched the margin again. The Hawks rallied for six runs in the inning to close within 13-8, but the bullpen settled in from there.
Lathan Haywood delivered a scoreless inning in relief, and Andrew Lepine was dominant to close the afternoon. The sophomore right-hander tossed 2 1/3 hitless innings, striking out four and allowing no walks to slam the door. As a staff, Stetson pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.
Jayden Hylton accounted for the final run in the eighth, scoring on De la Cruz's RBI single to cap the 14-8 victory.
