Braswell Shines as Hatters Split Friday in Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. — Stetson (13-4) split a pair of games Friday at the Oregon Classic, earning a 4-1 win over Samford before falling 10-1 to No. 20 Oregon at Jane Sanders Stadium.

Stetson 4, Samford 1
The Hatters opened the day with a strong all-around performance, limiting Samford (6-10) to one unearned run on six hits while capitalizing on timely offense in the second, fourth and sixth innings.

Stetson struck first in the second inning when Gia Napoli lifted a sacrifice fly to bring Amber Chumley home after she advanced on a wild pitch. Napoli later added her first hit of the season and finished with two RBIs.

After Samford trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the sixth on a fielding error, the Hatters responded immediately. Logan Forman led off the bottom of the inning with a double down the left field line — her sixth multi-hit game of the season — and Chumley followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Forman. A fielder's choice and a wild pitch allowed another run to cross, pushing the lead to 4-1.

Stetson's defense backed up the effort in the circle, highlighted by a double play in the fourth inning. The Hatters closed the game with a clean seventh to secure the win.

Forman finished with two hits and a run scored, while Chumley tallied a hit, an RBI and two walks. Napoli added two RBIs and a stolen base, while Nicole Edmiaston extended her on-base streak to 16 games.

Ava Braswell tossed a complete game, allowing six hits and no earned runs over seven innings while striking out four. The victory marked her fourth complete game of the season and seventh win overall.

No. 20 Oregon 10, Stetson 1
In the nightcap, the Ducks jumped out early and never looked back.

Oregon built a 3-0 lead in the first inning behind a two-run double and a steal of home. The Ducks added four more runs in the second on a grand slam and extended the margin to 9-0 through three innings with a two-run homer. A fourth-inning RBI single made it 10-0.

Stetson's lone run came in the fifth when Amber Chumley launched a solo home run to left center.

Hayley Arnold started in the circle, allowing five earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. Caitlyn Kulczyski worked 2 1/3 innings in relief, and Kennedy Temples recorded the final out.

Defensively, Nadia English turned a double play at second base, while Irianis Garcia and Berkley Demetter contributed solid efforts in the field.
