Hatters Drop Tight Series Finale to FGCU

DeLAND, Fla. — The Stetson Hatters fell 2-1 to the FGCU Eagles in Sunday's ASUN series finale at Melching Field.

The Hatters (18-29, 9-14 ASUN) outhit FGCU 11-9 but were unable to capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities in a tightly contested game.

FGCU struck first with a solo home run in the opening inning, but Stetson answered in the bottom half. Landon Russell singled and later came around to score on an RBI base hit from Yohann Dessureault, evening the score at 1-1.

The game remained deadlocked until the sixth inning when the Eagles used a double and an RBI extra-base hit to take a 2-1 lead.

Stetson threatened late, including a double from Russell in the eighth inning, but could not push across the tying run.

Connor Ball (2-2) turned in a strong outing for the Hatters, tossing six innings of two-run baseball while allowing no walks. Ethan Phillips followed with 2.1 scoreless innings in relief to keep Stetson within striking distance.

At the plate, Russell led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, including a double and a stolen base. Anthony Gonzalez added two hits, while Dessureault drove in the Hatters' lone run.
