DeLand, Fla. ? The Hatters broke their seven game losing streak in an easy win over the University of North Florida 72-50, Thursday evening at the Edmunds Center.
The evening began with a presentation to honor senior Janene Maclin for reaching the 1000 career point mark in her time here at Stetson, the night ended with the Hatters taking their first win in seven games.
Tonight's win is the largest win margin for the Hatters this season. Senior Janene Maclin (Chicago, Ill.) and junior Vlendy Roldan (Kissimmee, Fla.) each came away with 14 points to lead Stetson to victory. Maclin shot 6-9 from the field, including a perfect 2-2 from the charity strip. Freshman Prue Kenny (Geelong, Australia) followed with a career high 12 points and six rebounds.
The Lady Ospreys jumped out to a three point lead on a shot by Jennifer Bowen, the teams leading scorer with 12 points, to start the game. The Hatters took the lead on a jumper by Roldan at the 17:37 mark. From that point on the Hatters would keep the lead and control the tempo of the rest of the game.
In the first half the Hatters largest lead came on a lay-up by Maclin to go up by 18. Stetson took its largest lead of the year into the locker room, 40-26. The Hatters shot an impressive 63% from the field in the first half, going 17-27.
The second half Stetson played their game and never allowed the Lady Ospreys to get closer than 14 points on the Hatter lead. The largest lead of the night came with 4:11 remaining in the game on a three pointer by junior Jamie Nesbit (Peoria, Ariz.). After a pair of free throws by the Lady Ospreys Shaina Strozier, North Florida brought the lead down to 22 points and that would be the final result. The Hatters took their largest win of the season by a score of 72-50.
The Lady Ospreys were led by Jennifer Bowen with 12 points, shooting 4-7 from beyond the arc.
The Hatters will play in their last regular season home game on Saturday, February 24 against Jacksonville at 2:00 pm. After the game the team will honor its two seniors Kim Manning and Janene Maclin in their last home game as a Hatter.
