(DeLand, Fla.) ? In a rematch of last year's Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament final, East Tennessee State handed Stetson a 5-2 defeat Friday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Hatters earned wins at No.2 and No. 6 singles.
“Both teams had a lot of emotion out there,” head coach Sasha Schmid said.
Stetson fell to 5-8 overall and 3-2 in the A-Sun while ETSU improved to 6-7 and 2-0 in the conference.
Breanna Atkinson took the No. 2 match over Olya Batsula 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Katherine St. Clair took the No. 6 match 6-3, 7-5.
“I cannot say enough about Katherine's hard fought, determined play today to get us the win at No. 6,” Schmid said. “And Breanna fought back after losing the first set to finish strong and get a good singles win.”
Anna Leonenko and Catherine Canady each dropped hard fought 3-set matches. Leonenko's defeat snapped her 5-match winning streak.
“We know we need to keep working hard and improve with each practice and each match we play for the rest of the season,” Schmid said.
Stetson remains at home and will face Wyoming at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
