Jacksonville, FL ? The Stetson University women's soccer team traveled to Jacksonville Florida Friday night to play Coastal Carolina in the first round of the Kick Out Cancer tournament hosted by Jacksonville University. After two overtime periods, and 110 minutes of play Stetson (1-0-1) and Coastal (0-2-1) played to a 1-1 tie. 

The Lady Chanticleers opened the scoring at 10:27 of the first half. Ashleigh Gunning started the play with a long pass from midfield to Samantha Teijelo. The sophomore out of Holmdel, NJ then sent a crossing pass to Senior Amanda Gelsomino who was able to slip it past Hatter goalkeeper Andrea Garavaglia.

 “Overall I was really proud of the way our girls played tonight. We had about a 15-minute lapse where we let them score, just like our game against Presbyterian”, said Hatter Head Coach Julie Orlowski. “We need to work on that”.

Stetson answered Coastal's goal a few minutes later when DeLand's own Sarah Stock scored her third goal of the season from ten yards out in the center of the box. The goal was assisted by Freshman Tessa Gavilsky out of Granite City, Illinois.

“Several players tried to stop her (Stock) but she still scored a goal”, said Orlowski. “I was impressed with the amount of heart the girls showed coming back from a goal down.”

Stetson spread out the scoring attack with eight players picking up shots for a total of 14. Leading the way was Sophomore Emily Yero with three. Coastal finished with 12.

Stetson returns to the Kick Out Cancer Tournament Sunday at Noon to take on a very tough Baylor University team.
