Buies Creek, N.C. ? Stetson, ranked #9 in the South Region, traveled to North Carolina on Thursday to open the conference season against Campbell. The Hatters (3-4-1, 0-1-0) lost the game late when the Camels (3-5-0, 1-0-0) delivered on a penalty kick for a 2-1 final score.
Stetson opened the scoring at 17:29 of the first half with a Ryan Corning (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) goal assisted by Kirk Labusch (Brandon, Fla.). The Camels evened the score at 33:30 on a goal by Jason Keever and created a 1-1 score at the half.
The teams played a scoreless second half until 69:39 on the clock when Stetson defender Richard Porteous (Austin, Texas) was whistled for a hand ball in the box. Vince Petrasso took advantage of the opportunity and scored his second game-winner in as many games against the Hatters. In last year's A-Sun Tournament semifinal game Petrasso scored the first goal in Campbell's 2-0 win.
The teams finished even in shots with 12 each, while the Hatters held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Stetson will be in Macon, Ga. on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. A-Sun game versus Mercer University.
