DeLand, Fla. ? The Stetson baseball team rebounded from its season opening loss to Michigan State to defeat the University of Connecticut 4-2 Saturday night at Melching Field. Junior Jeremy Cruz was 2-for 3 with a double and Aaron Crittenden was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI to lead the Hatter offense.
The Huskies opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning when Matt Karl (Wallingford, Conn.) reached base and advanced to second on a throwing error by shortstop Robert Crews (Port Charlotte, Fla.). He then moved over to third on a single by Mike Olt (Branford, Conn.) and scored the unearned run on a wild pitch.
Stetson picked up all its runs in a big fourth inning capped by a two-RBI single by Aaron Crittenden (Fort Myers, Fla.). It all started when freshman Jacob deGrom (DeLeon Springs, Fla.) struck out, yet reached first base on a wild pitch. Fellow freshman Robert Crews hit a sharp single to left field. Both players moved up on the second wild pitch and junior Jeremy Cruz (Miami, Fla.) and senior Justin Bass (DeLand, Fla.) followed with a walks to load the bases and then score Stetson's first run. When Crittenden singled he brought home Crews and Cruz, Bass also scored on the play when right fielder Pat Mahoney (Des Moines, Ia.) let the ball get past him and to the wall.
The Huskies added a run in the fifth inning on a single by Peter Faste (Hamden, Ma.) and a sacrifice fly by Dale Brannon (St. Petersburg, Fla.).
Nick Pugliese started on the mound for the Hatters pitching six innings, giving up two runs, one earned run, and striking out six Huskies. Justin Dechert (Boynton Beach, Fla.) added two perfect innings of relief allowing no hits and striking out two batters. Stetson's preseason All-American Robbie Elsemiller (Okeechobee, Fla.) closed the game with his first save of the season in front 1,927 home town fans.
Stetson is now 1-1 on the season after dropping its opener to Michigan State last night, 6-4. Tomorrow is day three of the Bright House Invitational at Melching Field. After a 12:00 p.m. game between Michigan State at Connecticut, the Hatters will close out the tournament by taking on #6 Missouri at 4:00 p.m. Missouri is 2-0 in the Invitational including a 7-1 win over UConn yesterday, and a 14-9 victory over Michigan State earlier this afternoon.
