Fort Myers, Fla. ? Sophomore Breanna Atkinson (Bradenton, Fla.) picked up wins in singles and doubles to lead the Stetson women's tennis team (1-3, 1-0 Atlantic Sun) to its first dual match win of the season Saturday at A-Sun foe Florida Gulf Coast. The Hatters took five of six singles matches to defeat the Eagles 6-1.
Atkinson beat her #2 singles opponent Maria Maggiorini 6-3, 7-5 after teaming with junior Katherine St. Clair (West Palm Beach, Fla.) to knock off Brett Kinley and Leah Johnson 8-1 at #3 doubles. Three other Hatters won their singles matches in straight sets. At #3, freshman Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) won her first career collegiate match 6-2, 6-1 over Lauren Pfeiffer while senior Catherine Canady (Jacksonville, Fla.) routed Johnson 6-1, 6-0 at fifth singles. Senior Anna Leonenko (Calgary, Alta. made her spring debut in fine fashion, sweeping Kinley at sixth singles 6-4, 6-4.
Sophomore Valentina Galbarini (Montevideo, Uruguay) provided a key point for the Hatters with a hard-fought win at #1 singles over Maria Braniecka. Galbarini won the first set 7-5, dropped the next one 3-6 and then outlasted Braniecka 10-6 in the tiebreaker.
Natalie Gorham (Miami, Fla.) and Katherine Nowicki (Jacksonville, Fla.) helped earn the doubles point for Stetson when the sophomore duo teamed up to beat Maggiorini and Pfeiffer 8-3 at the #2 position.
Jordan Vaughn gave Florida Gulf Coast its only point of the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Gorham at #4 singles. She and Braniecka also defeated Galbarini and Purushotham 8-3 at #1 doubles.
The Hatters return to the courts next Saturday, Feb. 16 at Volusia County rival Bethune-Cookman. The match in Daytona Beach will begin at 11 a.m.
