Amanda Duo Leads Hatters to Tournament Title

Deland, Fla. ? Sophomore pitcher Amanda Lindsey (Byhalia, Miss.) threw a two-hit shutout and junior left fielder Amanda Bailey (Destin, Fla.) drove in the game-winning run to lead the Stetson softball squad (14-8) to a 1-0 win over Albany in the championship game of the Stetson Invitational Sunday afternoon.  Lindsey struck out eight en route to her fourth shutout of the season.

With two out in the fifth inning and Lindsey on second base after she was hit by a pitch and sacrificed over, Bailey drove a hard ground ball past Albany third baseman Kristine Bill and down the left field line to score Lindsey.  The Great Danes would only manage to get one runner as far as second base in their final three turns at bat as Stetson claimed the victory.

Both teams had chances to score earlier in the ballgame as the Hatters left the bases loaded in the second inning and then again in the third.  Albany also loaded the bases in its half of the third inning but Lindsey was able to get out of the jam by striking out center fielder Nicole Kothe.

Senior third baseman Lindsay Wightman (Surrey, B.C.) singled to lead off the game and Lindsey doubled in the seventh for Stetson's only other hits of the game.  Albany went hitless from Kothe's bunt single with one out in the first to pinch hitter Bailey Van Deest's base hit with the Great Danes down to their final out of the game in the seventh.

Lindsey walked two and hit two batters but struck out eight hitters to lower her season ERA to 1.33.  Albany pitcher Marissa Powell gave up one run on three hits and five walks in seven innings while fanning four.

Stetson is back in action next weekend when it hosts the Hatter Classic at Patricia Wilson Field.  The three-day event features the Hatters taking on Liberty and Presbyterian at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively, in Friday's opening action.  Jamie Bataille calls all the action through Hatter Vision on the official online home of Stetson Athletics, www.gohatters.com.
