Hatters Blast Kennesaw State and Delaware On Senior Day

DeLand, Fla. ? The Stetson women's tennis team (11-8, 6-3 Atlantic Sun) closed out the home portion of its 2008 schedule with a 7-0 A-Sun conference victory over Kennesaw State and a 6-1 win over Delaware on Saturday at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.  In the two matches, the Hatters went 6-0 in doubles and 13-1 in singles.

In the morning romp over KSU, no Hatter individual or duo dropped a set and in only one match did an Owl win four games in a set.  Freshman Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) and sophomore Daniella Palmiotto (Boca Raton, Fla.) won their matches in dominating 6-1, 6-1 fashion.  It was the first action of the spring season for Palmiotto.

Stetson cruised through the doubles portion of the match, winning a total of 24 out of 28 games played.  Sophomores Breanna Atkinson (Bradenton, Fla.) and Katherine Nowicki (Jacksonville, Fla.) won 8-1 in their match, as did Purushotham and sophomore Valentina Galbarini (Montevideo, Uruguay).

Against Delaware later in the afternoon, the Hatters took the doubles point, helped by an 8-2 #1 position win from Galbarini and Purushotham, before winning five of the six singles matches.  Atkinson had to battle from a set down to defeat Courtney Fenimore, rallying to win 1-6, 7-6, 11-9.  The four other Stetson wins were all in straight sets to hand UD its first loss of the spring.  Galbarini, freshman Megan Jones (Miramar, Fla.) and senior Anna Leonenko (Calgary, Alta.) lost only one game each in dominating wins.

Leonenko and fellow senior Catherine Canady (Jacksonville, Fla.) were both victorious in their final appearances as Hatters at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

Stetson, which has now won five straight matches for the first time this year, travels to the Music City next weekend to face Lipscomb and Belmont.  The Hatters take on the Lady Bisons of LU at 1:30 p.m. CT (2:30 p.m. ET) on Friday before facing the Belmont Bruins the next morning.
