DeLand, Fla. ? The Stetson women's tennis team (5-5, 4-0 Atlantic Sun) beat the rain as well as visiting North Florida (5-6, 3-1 A-Sun) to stay undefeated in conference action with a 5-2 win Friday morning at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Hatters won the #1-5 singles matches all in straight sets to claim the win.
The match actually began yesterday afternoon as the Lady Ospreys won the first two doubles matches to take the doubles point. At that time, however, rain moved in and forced the suspension of the match. When it resumed this morning at 9 a.m. the third doubles match was abandoned and the two teams went right to the singles proceedings.
Freshman Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) dropped just two games in her 6-0, 6-2 win over Maria Melihova at #3 singles while sophomores Valentina Galbarini (Montevideo, Uruguay) and Katherine Nowicki (Jacksonville, Fla.) each recorded 6-2, 6-3 victories. Sophomore Breanna Atkinson (Bradenton, Fla.) and freshman Megan Jones (Miramar, Fla.) also won in two sets each.
“We had to play well and compete at a high level to get these singles wins today,” Head Coach Sasha Schmid said.
The Hatters take on conference rival Jacksonville at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning in the opening act of a hardcourt doubleheader at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Stetson and JU men face off at 2 p.m.
