Hatters Just Off the Lead At Sea Trail Intercollegiate

Sunset Beach, N.C. ? Junior Dave McAndrew (Barrington, R.I.) and freshman Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) shot dueling one under-par rounds of 71 and are tied for fourth place overall as the Stetson men's golf team stands in second place after the first round of the season-opening Sea Trail Intercollegiate, hosted by Elon University.  The Hatters are at +8 as a team, just one shot behind Murray State.

McAndrew fired a 34 on the front nine, the second best score in the field today, while Ryder's 34 on the back made him one of only a handful of players to go under par on that side.  Sophomore Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) and senior Tommy Parker (Palm Beach, Fla.) each shot five over-par 77s while sophomore Joe Brown (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) rounded out the Stetson contingent with an 81.

The team standings are tight at the top after 18 holes with Murray State (+7) leading the Hatters by just one shot.  Wofford and A-Sun foe USC Upstate are tied for third at +9 while UNC Pembroke and host Elon recorded team scores of +11 and stand in a tie for fifth place.  Volusia County rival Bethune-Cookman is in seventh place with 11 other squads completing the field.

Elon's Steve Dressel holds the individual lead after a three under-par 69, one stroke ahead of Baxter Culler (USC Upstate) and Mitchell Moore (Murray State).  McAndrew and Ryder are in a logjam at -1, tied with Tusculum's Chase Carroll, Radford's Lane Hite and Murray State's Hunter Ford.

The tournament continues tomorrow and concludes on Sunday.
