Mt. Pleasant, S.C. ? The Stetson men's soccer team (3-2-1) put on a late charge to pull even with Alabama A&M (4-3-2) and then played a pair of scoreless overtime periods to secure a 2-2 draw in the opening game of the Saturn of Charleston/Nike Soccer Classic.
A&M jumped out to an early lead with a goal at 25:29 and then created some distance with a second goal at 68:27 of the second half.
Less than 10 minutes later the freshman duo of Giulio D'Amore (DeLand, Fla.) and Gonzalo deMujica (Weston, Fla.) broke the ice for Stetson. deMujica set up D'Amore with his second goal of the season and the Hatters were on the scoreboard. It was the third assist of 2008 for deMujica.
With less than five minutes remaining Stetson continued to apply the pressure. Then at 85:08 Stetson ended up on the receiving end of an own-goal by Alabama A&M. While attempting to clear the ball off a long throw in by the Hatters, one of the A&M players headed the ball past his keeper and into the net.
Overall A&M held a 15-6 advantage in shots, while Stetson led that category 1-0 in overtime. Hatters' goalkeeper Marc Galizia (Brandenton, Fla.) picked up eight saves in the game. Ryan Corning Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and Kevin Munz (Jupiter, Fla.) led the team with two shots each.
Stetson will be back on the field Saturday at 3:30 p.m. taking on the host school College of Charleston.
