Men's Basketball Stetson University

Tigers Top Hatters in Savannah

Savannah, Ga. - Freshman Joel Naburgs (Victoria, Australia) scored a career-high nine points, all coming in the first half, and senior A.J. Smith (Cocoa, Fla.) scored 12 points, most of which came in the second half, yet it wasn't enough to keep Stetson (2-7) from falling 57-46 to Savannah State (5-8) Monday night.

Naburgs hit three field goals (3-for-7), all from 3-point range, and added team-highs with six rebounds and three assists. Smith finished just 3-of-10 from the field, and was 6-for-8 from the line.

The Hatters fought hard yet couldn't seem to hit their shots when they needed them. Stetson hit just 32.0% on the night which included a disappointing 0-for-12 from long range in the second half. Overall Savannah State outrebounded Stetson 40-33, yet the Hatters outscored the Tigers 16-12 in the paint.

"One bright spot tonight was Joel Narbugs", said Stetson head coach Derek Waugh. "He is a really good player and we need someone else to step up and score for us. He was really good tonight."

Stetson opened the game with a 6-0 run after a 3-pointer by Ridge Graham (Stuart, Fla.) and a trio of free throws by Smith. The Hatters held the advantage until 7:50 when a Rashad Hassan free throw gave the Tigers their first lead at 15-14. The home team's lead increased to seven with two minutes remaining and then Stetson took over.

The Hatters finished the first half with an 8-0 run led by Brandon Williams who knocked down a 3-pointer with 56 seconds remaining, and then drove the baseline and flipped up a shot that bounced off the rim and fell through at the buzzer to give Stetson a 26-25 lead.

Savannah State hit the first field goal of the second half, a 3-pointer. After the home team built a five point lead Stetson came back tied the score at 31 with a Smith jumper at 14:58. That, however, was as close as the Hatters would come for the remainder of the game.

Next up the Hatters will return home to enjoy the Christmas holiday and then begin the Atlantic Sun Conference schedule in earnest by hosting Florida Gulf Coast at 8:00 p.m. on December 29. Murray Miller and Harry Arnold will be on hand to call the action for Hatter Vision. Fans can catch the broadcast at www.gohatters.com.
