DeLand, Fla. ? The Stetson women's tennis team improved to 2-3 on the season with a clean sweep of visiting Bethune-Cookman at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon. The Hatters used the same lineup of players for singles and doubles, recording straight-set victories in all six singles matches and taking all three doubles matches.
Juniors Breanna Atkinson (Bradenton, Fla.), Valentina Galbarini (Montevideo, Uruguay), Natalie Gorham (Miami, Fla.) and Katherine Nowicki (Jacksonville, Fla.), along with sophomore Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) and freshman Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) were all double winners today.
The most dominating win was posted by Gorham at #6 singles, where she drubbed Andrea Paez 6-0, 6-1. Purushotham defeated Stacey Lopez 6-2, 6-1 at the #3 slot in impressive fashion as well. Nowicki had to fight the hardest for her victory, outlasting Valeisha Kendrick 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the #4 singles match. The Wildcats fell to 0-3 on the season.
Stetson is back in action Saturday at 4 p.m. when it hosts Stephen F. Austin at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The LadyJacks, from Nacogdoches, Texas and the Southland Conference, head to the Sunshine State with a 1-5 record and will face Rollins on Friday before taking on the Hatters.
