Charleston, S.C. ? The Stetson women's tennis team fell to 0-3 on the season with a 6-1 loss to Winthrop on Saturday and a close 4-3 loss to the College of Charleston on Sunday. Both matches were played at C of C's Patriots Point Tennis Complex. Natalie Gorham (Miami, Fla.) earned singles wins in both matches.
Against Winthrop, Gorham, a junior, picked up the only point for the Hatters when she defeated Paula Pereira 4-6, 6-0 (10-6) at #6 singles. She also defeated Amanda Schwarz of the College of Charleston 7-5, 6-1 at the same position the next day.
Other winners for Stetson against the Cougars were junior Valentina Galbarini (Montevideo, Uruguay) and freshman Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.). Galbarini knocked off Link Leskosky 6-1, 6-4 at #1 singles and Gunning beat Keely Mulligan 6-3, 7-6 at #4 singles. The match was decided at the #3 slot where junior Katherine Nowicki (Jacksonville, Fla.) battled Caroline Newman into the third set. Ultimately Newman bested Nowicki 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to earn the match victory for the home team.
The Hatters open the home and Atlantic Sun portions of their schedule when they host Florida Gulf Coast at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Stetson-FGCU men's match will take place right before the women's match.
