DeLand, Fla. ? The Stetson women's tennis team (6-4) improved to 5-0 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center this season with a 5-2 victory over Eastern Kentucky (11-4) Tuesday evening. Juniors Valentina Galbarini (Montevideo, Uruguay) and Katherine Nowicki (Jacksonville, Fla.) were double winners for the Hatters.
Galbarini and sophomore Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) won their #1 doubles match 8-3 over Jemma Euers and Anouk Faure while Nowicki was pairing with junior Breanna Atkinson (Bradenton, Fla.) one spot down the lineup to knock off Alexandra Sitnikova and Svetlana Pimenova 8-5 and clinch the doubles point for Stetson.
When the action moved to singles, Galbarini and Nowicki were two of Stetson's four winners. Galbarini survived a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 battle with Sitnikova at the top of the lineup while Nowicki shut down Faure 6-3, 6-4 at #4 singles. Also winning for the Hatters was freshman Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.), a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 winner over Euers in the #5 position, and sophomore Jacqueline Faulk (Port Charlotte, Fla.), who defeated Alyze Pagal 6-3, 6-2.
Stetson will put its perfect home record back on the line tomorrow when Northern Illinois drops by for a 4 p.m. match at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
