Stetson Bowls Over GSU on Super Sunday

Women's Tennis Stetson University

Top-Seeded Hatters Sweep Campbell in A-Sun Semifinals

Johnson City, Tenn. ? The top-seeded Stetson women's tennis team (14-7) blanked fourth-seeded Campbell 4-0 in the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships Friday morning on the ETSU campus.  Junior Breanna Atkinson (Bradenton, Fla.) was a double winner for the Hatters, who will take on either second-seeded ETSU or third-seeded Jacksonville tomorrow morning as they take aim at their first league title in 20 years.

Stetson will be appearing in the A-Sun championship match for the third time in the last five years after losing 4-3 at home to Florida Atlantic in 2005 and 5-0 to ETSU in Macon, Ga. in 2006.  If the Hatters win tomorrow against the Lady Bucs or Dolphins, they will advance to the first NCAA Tournament in program history.

Atkinson was dominant all match long, first pairing with junior Katherine Nowicki (Jacksonville, Fla.) to blast Anais Gomar and Blanca Saenz 8-1 at #2 doubles, then rolling past Ana Surviladze 6-1, 6-1 at #2 singles.  Stetson clinched the doubles point when senior Katherine St. Clair (Palm Beach, Fla.) and freshman Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) took down the Lady Camel duo of Borislava Nikolova and Liza Bensimon 8-5 at #3 doubles.

With that 1-0 lead in hand, the Hatters wasted little time picking up the three singles wins necessary to end the match early due to time constraints.  In addition to Atkinson's victory, junior Valentina Galbarini (Montevideo, Uruguay) beat Saenz 6-1, 6-4 at the top of the lineup while sophomore Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India) picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nikolova at the #3 slot.  All other singles matches were left unfinished.

Stetson defeated both ETSU and Jacksonville during the regular season by narrow 4-3 margins, edging the Dolphins on the road on March 5 and beating the Lady Bucs at home on April 2.  The championship match is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
