Gilstrap Leads Hatters to Road Win Over Golden Panthers

Miami, Fla. - The Stetson men's soccer team traveled to Miami Friday night and picked up a big road win over Florida International (2-2-0). Senior forward Griffin Gilstrap (Safety Harbor, Fla.) had a career-game for the Hatters (2-0-0) with a pair of goals and an assist in the 3-2 win. Freshman Jonathan Mendoza (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) scored his first collegiate goal which turned out to be the game-winner for the visitors.

In one night Gilstrap equaled his career goal total. The first came in the seventh minute of the game with an assist to Fredrik Brustad (Oslo, Norway). The second was in the seventh minute of the second half assisted by Ryan Corning (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.

"Griffin played very well tonight", said Stetson Head Coach T. Logan Fleck. "But it wasn't just the two goals. The work he put in on both sides of the ball was invaluable."

One thing that makes soccer coaches nervous is a 2-0 lead, and tonight was no different. At 64:09 FIU's Sebastian Frings scored an unassisted goal to narrow the margin to one and forced the Hatters to pick up the play. Less than a minute later Mendoza pounced on a first ball from Gilstrap and delivered a well struck left footer to once again stretch the lead to a pair.

FIU applied intense pressure in the second half and led 14-4 in shots. The Golden Panthers managed a late goal, yet Stetson would not be denied the important road win.

Stetson goalkeeper Logan Potter (Merritt Island, Fla.) went the distance and made six saves for his second win in as many games. Gonzalo de Mujica (Weston, Fla.) and Giulio D'Amore (DeLand, Fla.) were outstanding in the midfield all night and played the full 90 minutes.

"Overall I am very happy with our effort tonight", said Fleck. "As a team we started showing chemistry."

Next up on the road trip is Florida Atlantic on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Boca Raton.
