DeLand, Fla. - Freshman setter Kelli Carneal had another excellent match to start her career, notching eight kills, 13 digs, 12 assists and hitting .571, but the Stetson volleyball team (0-6) suffered another disappointing loss Saturday evening at the Edmunds Center. Southern Illinois swept the Hatters 25-13, 25-14, 25-16 in the finale of the Holiday Inn Stetson Invitational. Carneal and sophomore outside hitter Kaylee Ream (Venice, Fla.) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Carneal tallied her first career double-double and came within two kills of Stetson's first triple-double in two years. Senior middle blocker Laura Boyd (La Crescenta, Calif.) notched a season-high eight kills and Ream had seven kills. Sophomore middle blocker Sam Stonish (Stony Brook, N.Y.) finished with eight digs.
Tournament MVP Jennifer Berwanger torched the Hatters for 13 kills and 14 digs, hitting .370 in the process, while Chandra Roberson had 12 kills and four blocks. Roberson and setter Rachael Brown (38 assists, eight digs, four blocks) also made the All-Tournament Team. SIU out-hit Stetson .324 to .087 in the match. The Hatters have been held to a hitting percentage of .115 or lower five times in six matches to start the season.
Jovana Blazeski and Maria Ceccarelli of Florida A&M were also named to the All-Tournament Team. In Saturday's FAMU-SIU match, Blazeski recorded a whopping 30 kills and 19 digs in a losing effort as the Salukis overcame a 2-0 deficit in sets to win in five stanzas.
