Boca Raton, Fla. - The Stetson women's tennis team (3-1) got off to a good start in its weekend road trip to South Florida, downing host Florida Atlantic (2-5) by a 5-2 score on Saturday. Four Hatters were double winners, including reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week Unnati Purushotham (Hyderabad, India).
The Hatters swept all three doubles matches, including an 8-4 win by the nation's 60th-ranked duo of senior Valentina Galbarini (Montevideo, Uruguay) and freshman Carolina de los Santos (Montevideo, Uruguay) over Justine Humair and Cassie Bergeson at the top of the lineup. Purushotham and sophomore Shannon Gunning (Boca Raton, Fla.) were the most dominant, winning 8-2 at #3 doubles and then each picking off a straight set singles victory. Gunning, competing in her hometown, routed Natasha Basma 6-2, 6-0 at #3 singles. Senior Katherine Nowicki (Jacksonville, Fla.) was also a winner in singles and doubles for Stetson.
The Hatters open A-Sun action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they face Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers.
